7. A pilot in his helicopter spots two forest fires. The fire that is due east is at an angle of
depression of 45. The fire that is due west is at an angle of depression of 35. What is
the distance between the two fires if the altitude of the airplane is 2000m? Draw a
diagram as part of your solution. (4 marks)
8. Courtney is flying a kite on a windy day. When the kite is 12.0 m above ground,
it makes an angle of 55° with the horizontal. If Courtney is holding the string 1.5 m
above the ground, how much string has she released? Round your answer to the
nearest metre. Show your work. (4 marks)
9. Two lifeguards, Anita and Bessie, are sitting in their guard chairs at opposite ends of
the pool which are 3 m high. They are both viewing a young child swimming. The
angle of depression from Anita to the young child is 11 and from Bessie the angle of
depression is 7. Determine the entire length of the pool. (5 marks)
