CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Background of the study

In the first few months of 2020 the many countries closed due to the fact that there are rising

cases of COVID-19, a global pandemic that affected every country. It is by then that the world

went to series of lockdown that have resulted to many establishments’ temporary closure. The

coronavirus pandemic upended almost every aspect of school. It wasn’t just the transition from

whiteboards to computer screens. It put to the test fundamental concepts such as instruction,

attendance, testing, funding, the role of technology, and the human connections that hold it all

together.

UNESCO (2020) confirms that universities and schools closure have several adverse

consequences on students such as interrupted learning which results in students and youth being

deprived of opportunities for growth and development. Learning providers can use e-learning

systems to help them manage, plan, deliver, and track their learning and teaching activities. It

also intends to assist instructors, schools, and universities in facilitating student learning during

university and school closing periods. Furthermore, most of these systems are free, which will

aid in continual learning during the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, providing free learning materials in an E-learning system is becoming a major

difficulty for many universities. Although the E-learning system is a significant source of

knowledge for students, it is still difficult to completely comprehend the situation because not all

students are able to have stable connectivity and are struggling financially.
Being in an online class especially in the rural areas in Iloilo have been a struggle for the

students because of unstable signal and data connection that resulted pending activities and

performance task. BTVTEd CP Students are having a hard time catching up with requirements of

all their subjects that resulted to cramming. Studies shown that cramming is one of the least

effective ways to learn a subject. Students spend hours memorizing as much of the material as

possible in a short period of time, like the night before the test. Many students cannot recall

much information after a cram session. (Studying Test, 2017).

Up to 54% of the lessons should be regained after 1 day and the least of 17% should still be

remembered after 63 days (Briggs, S, 2029).

Since the success of having a productive online class is dependent on the E-learning system

provided by the universities to the students. As a result, the goal of this study is to develop an

effective E-learning system that will meet students’ information needs while using a responsive

E-learning website.

The occurrence of this problems is mainly because the students lack in time management and

strategies that can help them in accomplishing their tasks without rushing. The lack of time

management affects college students. (Young, S, 2017) With these identified problems, we have

come up to the solution of creating an online learning environment with electronic to-do lists

exclusively for the BTVTED CP Students. To-do lists are the lists of tasks that need to be

completed, typically organized in order of priority. Lastly, studies have shown that people

perform better when they have written down what they need to do.
Statement of the Problem

This study is conducted to develop a system where in the list of subjects and tasks that the

BTVTED CP 3-A need to accomplish will be organized.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of acceptability of iTradean System when evaluated using the ISO

25010?

2. What is the level of acceptability of iTradean System in terms of suitability,

performance, etc.?

3. Will the iTradean system manage the uploading and downloading activity or

documents?

4. Can the iTradean system manage accessible PDFs and Documents format lessons of

all subjects?

5. Is the iTradean capable of managing weekly activity to-do list?

Hypothesis

Based on the aforementioned objectives, the following hypotheses were advanced:

1.BTVTEd Computer Programming students will be able to download and read subject lessons

using iTradeans: E-learning Website. iTradeans: E-learning website will also let user access the

built-in activity to-do list.

2.BTVTEd Computer Programming students will have a good user experience accessing the

iTradeans: E-learning Website.

3.There is no significant difference between the performance of BTVTED CP 3-A and the use of

iTradeans.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

This experimental study on the creation of iTredeans for students that are affected by changes in

educational system due to pandemic is utilizing the concepts of Computer Aided Instruction or

Computer Aided Learning, (Guadana, 2018). E-Learning is the use of computer systems and

digital communications as tools of delivering instruction.

teachers of BTVTEd CP of ISAT University. There are total of 42 respondents, 4 males and 29

females from BTVTEd students and 9 subject teachers. This study is conducted during the first

semester of the pandemic school year 2021. The research instrument used in this study to gather

data will be online tests and surveys, and questionnaires designed by the researchers.
CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature

Related Literature

Through technological and globalization innovation, the traditional mode of instruction in higher

education institutions has been transformed through e-learning. It is a new educational trend

which created a new medium in the delivery of instruction (Burac et al., 2019).

Online learning (E-learning) has become a global phenomenon as many organizations and

educational institutions worldwide have entered the field in an attempt to enhance the students’

experience of learning (Davis & Wong, 2007).

The reinforcement of knowledge has evolved to e-learning. E-learning has become the modern

way of learning, so it is exceptional for the students to hold on with changing technology and

time (Bombaes et al., 2019). As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the Philippines, most schools

have adapted online teaching and learning to keep students safe and help control the spread of

the virus.
According to Isla 2020, eLearning is a way to provide quick delivery of lessons. In face-to-face

sessions, every instructor has his or her own method of teaching. Each varies in approach and

style and is susceptible to mistakes. You can eliminate these issues with e-learning.

Online learning provides consistent and standardized training every time. Each learner goes

through the same experience regardless of when and where he or she takes the course (Puri,

2016).

In a literature entitled “Efficacy of online learning courses for higher education institution using

meta-analysis” (2019), it is stated that online learning has become popular because of its

potential for providing more flexible access to content and instruction at any time, from any

place. Which means that the online world is really a big help for students learning, and so are

electronic task organizers.

Most successful people plan what they need to accomplish and it has been demonstrated that

having a written plan of action increases productivity.

Another literature presented by Research degree Insider (2016), includes online lists: brain

dumps, collaboration tools, and repositories as strategies that someone need to manage tasks. In

their report, it is stated that online to-do apps are great for delegation and team work.

The same report was presented by Pressbooks (2017), stating that time management for

successful university studying involves scheduling study activities in realistic segments and

using a system to plan ahead and set priorities.

Related Studies

Rapid advances in information and communications technology in the digital age have brought

about significant changes in the practice of distance education (DE) worldwide. DE practitioners

in the Philippines’ open university have coined the term ‘open and distance e-learning’ (ODeL)

to refer to the new forms of DE, which are characterized by the convergence of an open learning

philosophy, DE pedagogies, and e-learning technologies (Arinto, 2016).

E-learning is gaining popularity in the country due to its potentials and usefulness. But before

these benefits would be enjoyed, it is very important for an institution to be assessed (Doculan,

2016).

Higher education institutions worldwide have been pushed to experiment e-learning as the

traditional class-based learning is impossible under Covid-19 regulations (Demuyakor, 2020 &

Ratten, 2020).

From the study of Bryson & Andres, (2020) and Crawford et al., (2020), it is stated that number

of affected stakeholders, including government authorities, academic staff, students, and parents

are concerned if the shift from class-based learning to online learning will produce the desired

results. While it was anticipated that the wider implementation of online learning will pose new

challenges, possible innovation opportunities within higher education sector during these testing

times should never be overlooked.

On time management strategies for success it revealed that there are some strategies one can

begin using immediately to make the most of their time and it includes using calendar planner
and daily to-do list. It shows that calendar planners and to-do lists are effective ways to organize

one’s time and a great tool to fight procrastinations (Lumen 2017).

In the study conducted by Vijar (2020), she stated that students in the Philippines should make a

to-do list that works for them as part of their school survival tools to be ready for online classes.

It is also according to her that the importance of ticking something off on that list can push

students to move forward with their learning.

Studies looking at the effect of writing down a list of things to do date back to the 1920s and an

Eastern European psychologist named Bluma Zeigarnik. The so-called “Zeigarnik Effect”

demonstrated that the act of planning activities through “to-do” lists actually reduced executive

burden on the brain by freeing the brain from having to worry about unfinished tasks.

More recent studies confirmed the Zeigarnik Effect by finding that when people were not

allowed to finish a warm-up activity, they performed poorly on a subsequent brainstorming

activity. The implication is that people are more effective when they are able to cross off the first

thing on their list. It allows them to go on to the next thing.

CHAPTER 3

Methodology

Research Design

In this study, the experimental research design is done in the class with taking students and

teacher as population. According to Formplus (2021), Experimental research is a scientific

approach to research, where one or more independent variables are manipulated and applied to

one or more dependent variables to measure their effect on the latter. The effect of the

independent variables on the dependent variables is usually observed and recorded over some

time, to aid researchers in drawing a reasonable conclusion regarding the relationship between

these 2 variable types. The researcher chooses the design to determine the validity of

conclusions can be drawn from the study. This research design is used in the study of iTradeans:

An E-learning site exclusively for ISAT U BTVTeD CP 3-A students.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are 33 third-year students from ISAT University who took

Bachelor in Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTeD) majored in Computer

Programming and 9 profs. who are their subject teachers. The student-respondents are composed

of 4 males and 29 females.

The researcher used purposive sampling technique due to the fact that the study is conducted for

the certain population which is the BTVTeD CP 3-A students of ISAT University. According to

Dudovskiy, Purposive sampling (also known as judgment, selective or subjective sampling) is a

sampling technique in which researcher relies on his or her own judgment when choosing

members of population to participate in the study.

Research Instrument

A research instrument is a tool used to collect, measure, and analyze data related to your

subject. Research instruments can be tests, surveys, scales, questionnaires, or even checklists

(Duquesne University 2021). In this study, the researchers will use test as an instrument,

therefore, their researcher will apply a set of tests: Pre-test and Post-test. Before the instrument’s

collection of data, the researchers, firstly, do a try-out test to the students of BTVTeD CP 3-A.

There are 33 student-respondents for the try-out test. They have to complete the test that consist

of 5-8 questions while testing out the system for 25 minutes. Questionnaires and surveys will

also be given online.

Validity
Validity is defined as the extent to which a concept is accurately measured in a quantitative

study (Heale et al. 2015). To validate the research instrument of this study, the researchers are

asked to look for its appropriateness in terms of objectives, dependable in the evidence it

provides, and applicable to the particular situation and to conduct pilot testing.

Reliability

To measure the reliability, re·test will be applied. The reliability test is conducted to 35 out of 42

student-respondents of ISAT U, BTVTeD CP 3-A together with their subject teachers.

Data Gathering and Analysis Procedure

To gather the data needed in creating the iTradeans system, the researchers sent a letter to the

president of the university to ask for a permission to conduct the study. Upon the approval to

conduct the study, the researchers will then set an appointment to the dean of the college of

education to begin the study. The researchers then used data collection tools which are

questionnaires, observations and testing. The respondents are timed accordingly to answer the

prepared questionnaires and to perform the technical testing. Student-respondents are instructed

ahead to not leave any item unanswered, the researchers double-checked the questionnaires upon

the submission. The retrieval of the questionnaires, data are recorded, analyzed and interpreted

in accordance with the research design and statistical tools adopted.
