Assignment no. 4 Testing of BJT

Testing of Transistor
1. How do we identify the base terminal of the transistor?
Identify first whether the transistor is NPN or PNP transistor. Connect the probe to either of the
terminals and the other probe to another. If you got a reading to the first one, connect the other
to the last terminal and if you got a reading already, then the one you did not move is the base
terminal.

2. How does we identify the emitter and collector terminal of the transistor?
Connect the probe to either of the three terminals and serve it as the base terminal and connect
the other one to another, if you also don’t get a reading try changing the base terminal and
connect the other probe to another. If you got a reading on the first one, don’t move the probe
because that will serve as your base terminal and the other two as the emitter and collector. If
you got a reading already, you can identify now which is the collector and the emitter. The value
of the emitter is higher than the value of the collector.

3. What should be the indicator so that we can say that transistor is good or defective ?
If you got a reading correctly on a forward biased then the transistor is good, but if you got a
reading in a reversed biased then the transistor is defective. In addition, the difference between
emitter and collector should be only small and will not exceed one or more value or else the
transistor is defective.

4. Summarize the procedure in testing transistor.
Assuming that our transistor is the npn type and deciding to test the diode, we must first switch
the multimeter to the appropriate mode, then connect the red diode to the base and the black
one to the emitter. After this procedure, the meter should show a specific DC voltage value on
its display, which should be compared with the data in the technical documentation of the tested
transistor.

Conclusion:
I therefore conclude that when testing a diode, you should always know
whether it is NPN type or PNP type for you to be able to identify the
terminals easy. You should keep in mind that when testing a diode you
should always test it in a forward biased for you to measure the transistor
properly because if it’s in the reversed biased and you get a reading then
your transistor has a leakage or it’s defective.
