Task 2. Virtual Field Trips
What Are Virtual Field Trips? Use Your Own Words – Do NOT Just Copy/Paste This Information.
A virtual field trip is an exploration online that usually enhances the education of the student. It is
the ability to take your class on a field trip online to learn new things and connect content to the
outside world. It is normally centered around a video or multiple videos and has activities and
worksheets connected with it. It helps present educational information in different, unique ways.

What Are Advantages Of Virtual Field Trips?

The advantages of virtual field trips include enhancing students’ education. It allows for more
experiences that many may not be able to experience. It can also be more accessible, less
expensive, no transportation needed, less time absorbing, safer, and everyone can participate. This
makes it easier than actual field trips and makes sure that everyone can have a good experience
doing it.

What Are Disadvantages Of Virtual Field Trips?

The disadvantages of virtual field trips include being less immersive, less memorable, and less
engaging for the students. Out-of-school field trips create a whole experience out of the day. This
makes students way more engaged in the topics and helps them remember the day well. Many
virtual field trips will be forgotten easily as it does not use all of your senses.

The National Museum of Mathematics works towards engaging students into learning math in very
unique ways, by noticing the patterns around us.

Why Would Your Students Benefit From This Virtual Field Trip?
In the virtual field trip the students would try to solve a secret code using the substitution cipher.
Letters or groups of letters are replaced with other letters or groups of letters. Students will use a
series of complex puzzles to conceal and uncover messages. This will help them gain problem-
solving skills and will help them notice patterns. This can be very helpful in math problems.

You Would Use This Field Trip To Teach Something and/or How Would You Incorporate This Into A Lesson?
I will use the virtual field trip to expand on why these skills are important in math. Problem-solving
skills help so the math does not have to be memorized. Students can develop an understanding of
the process that is used to get solutions. Pattern recognition skills are also very important in math. I

can teach how patterns are present in many parts of math such as time tables, square roots, shapes,
and more. Recognizing patterns can help students realize relationships in math and its situations.

Why Would Your Students Benefit From This Virtual Field Trip?
This virtual trip shows how math can be used outside of the classroom. It teaches concepts in a
creative way and helps them learn math in a fun way. Students would learn about how to find area
and how it could be used in real-life situations. This also presents some problem-solving skills, which
are very helpful in math and solving problems and noticing patterns.

I think I could use this virtual lesson not only as a way to work on concepts such as area or multistep
multiplication/division problems, but I could also use it as a way to express how much math is used
outside of school. It shows how jobs that we do not really think of as math related, actually may
have more math than expected. I can also go on to explain other jobs that may have different forms
5
of math: baking, fashion design, or even professional sports. Not only this, I can also teach how their
can be pitfalls in equations! If a person asked how many solar panels could fit in a 2 x 10 space in a
roof. Many students would just take the area of that part of the roof and divide it by the area of the
solar panels; however, we must make sure that the solar panels could fit fully in the space. What if
the solar panels were 3 x 3? Then none would fit! So, this virtual field trip would be a great way to
discuss some of the pitfalls of math that many people fall into.

Why Would Your Students Benefit From This Virtual Field Trip?
Students would benefit from this virtual field trip because it helps them navigate the websites and
would be able to fluently multiply multi-digit numbers. It helps hit a fifth-grade standard but using
real world problems. While they are learning these standards, they are also learning about a candy
that many of them would like.

I think it would be a great assignment in the later couple of days when beginning to teach multidigit
multiplication. It will help give them practice and will hopefully leave a memorable experience
learning it. Again I think it would be a great way to teach problem-solving skills and how math is
used outside of the classroom in ways that most people would not expect.
