Research three (3) cases involving issues on data privacy

1. Commission on Elections Data Leak (2016)


In 2016, the website of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Philippines
was hacked, and the personal data of over 70 million registered voters were leaked
online. The leaked data included the full names, birthdays, addresses, passport details,
and fingerprints of voters. The hackers claimed that they were able to access the
database due to the Comelec's use of an outdated and vulnerable software.

The leaked data was reportedly used to carry out various forms of identity theft and
fraud, such as opening bank accounts, applying for loans, and creating fake social
media accounts. The victims of the data leak experienced various damages, such as
unauthorized transactions, fraudulent loans, and identity theft. Some also reported
receiving unsolicited calls and text messages from scammers who had access to their
personal information.

2. Department of Foreign Affairs Passport Data Breach (2017)


In 2017, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in the Philippines confirmed that
the personal data of around 100,000 passport applicants had been compromised due to
a data breach. The leaked data included the applicants' full names, birthdates,
addresses, and passport details.
