I. GIVE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION ON THE FOLLOWING AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
An autoimmune disorder called Grave’s disease causes overactive thyroid, or
hyperthyroidism. With this disease, the human immune system targets the small organ named
thyroid, pushing the organ to produce excess thyroid hormones more than the human body needs.
The thyroid is a small organ; it is a gland with a shape like butterfly in front of the neck of a
human. The role of the thyroid is to control how human body utilizes energy, affecting nearly
every neighboring organ in the human body even the way a person’s heart beats. However, when
hyperthyroidism left untreated with proper medication, it can cause serious health complications
with the muscles, bones, menstrual cycle, fertility, and the heart. Untreated hyperthyroidism for
pregnant mothers could badly affect both baby and mother. Grave’s disease also affects the
human skin and eyes (Wartofsky, 2017).
A chronic autoimmune disorder called Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disorder in which the
antibodies causes damage to communication between muscle and nerve, that weakens the human
skeletal muscles. This disorder distresses the voluntary muscles of the human body, specifically
those muscles that control the mouth, throat, eyes, and limbs. The disease has no age choice, but
it is frequently seen in young women aged 20 to 30 and in men aged 50 and older. According to
recent studies, the cause of this disorder is unknown and for now, there is no cure, but with early
treatment and proper medication can help people who have this disease live longer
(JohnHopkinsMedicine, 2018).
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disorder that is progressive, chronic, and disabling
autoimmune disease. This disease causes swelling, pain in and around the muscles and joints, it
also causes inflammation, and in worsts cases it can affect the other human body organs.
Specially, Rheumatoid arthritis usually targets the feet and hands first, but it can occur in any
joint (Brazier, 2021).
Mayo Clinic (2021), stated that Insulin-dependent diabetes or also known as Type 1
diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas of a patient produces small amount of
insulin or worst no insulin produced. Insulin is a hormone significantly needed to permit sugar
(glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.
A skin disease called psoriasis causes itchy scaly patches (infected skin may turn to red).
It is commonly found in some parts of human body like the knees, trunk, scalp, and elbows.
Sadly, psoriasis has no cure and this disease is a long-term chronic illness. This disease tends to
go through cycle, actively spreading for a couple of weeks, or months, then go inactive, or
remission for a while (MayoClinic, 2019).
