‘Restructure costs to become competitive’
Dear Colleagues,
Hon’ble Civil Aviation Minister, after
the Group of Minister’s approval
of our financial restructuring plan,
has advised that “Air India has to
restructure its costs to bring them in
line with industry norms.  They have to
become competitive”.  The minister has
also briefly touched upon the expansion
route we must take if the Dreamliner
is to join our fleet.  The Government,
the Ministry and all our stake holders
are keen about Air India’s quick turn-
around.
The approval for the financial
restructuring plan by the Group of
Ministers is a major step for us to move
ahead.  The plan would finally become
functional only after the Cabinet
approves it and the lending banks
implement it.  While this would reduce
the interest burden on our borrowings,
much has to be done by us in terms of
improving the performance.  We must
continue with our mission to improve
our performances in both physical
and financial terms.  Eventually,
we will have to survive on our own
performance and all of you will have
to realize it.  I am confident of the grit
and determination in you as well as the
resilience of Air India.   I am sure; we
would overcome the turbulent times.

In line with the market conditions,
our market share also keeps improving,
in the recent months.  Here, I would
like to share with you that the third
quarter of the financial year 2011-
12 has shown some encouraging
results.  The passenger revenues have
gone up to Rs.3096 crores during this
period as against Rs.2799 in the same
period last year.  This quarter has also
registered higher passenger revenues
as compared to the revenues in the
first two quarters viz., Rs. 2500 and
Rs. 2848 crores, respectively.  The
yields, though a cause of worry still,
have also shown some improvements as
compared to the previous quarter. But,
there is a lot to be done in terms of seat
factors and our on-time performance.

Shri Ajit Singh was sworn in as Cabinet Minister for
Civil Aviation at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan
on December 18, 2011, with the Hon’ble President of India
Smt Pratibha Patil administering the oath to him in the
presence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and Vice
President Shri. Hamid Ansari, among other dignitaries.
Son of former Prime Minister the late Chaudhary Charan
Singh, Shri Ajit Singh is a six-time member of the Lok
Sabha and represents the family bastion Baghpat. Born in
1939 in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Singh
was educated at Lucknow University, IIT Kharagpur and
the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He has a
special interest in agriculture and modern technology. Shri
Singh has worked in the computer industry in the US for
over 17 years before joining mainstream politics in India as
Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha in 1986.
Shri Singh became a Union Minister for Industry in 1989-
90. Subsequently, he has served as the Union Food Minister
during 1995-96 and as the Union Minister for Agriculture
from 2001 to 2003. Shri Singh is married to Smt. Radhika
Singh and has a son and two daughters. His son Shri Jayant
Chaudhary is currently MP from Mathura constituency in

MRO facility opened in Thiruvananthapuram

Maintenance, repair and overhaul
(MRO) unit of Air India set up
near the Thiruvananthapuram
International Airport was inaugurated on
December 16, 2011, by the then Minister
for Civil Aviation, Shri Vayalar Ravi. The
function was presided over by Dr Shashi
Tharoor, MP, in the presence of Shri K Babu,
Minister for Ports and Excise, Government
of Kerala.
A large number of officials from the
airport, police, customs, local administration
and Air India took part in the function.
The facility set up on 15 acres of land
given by the Kerala Government houses

AI celebrates Children’s Day with joyride

SAP -ERP Project enters

Blueprint Stage of Phase 2

ir India’s Enterprise Resource Planning
(ERP) initiative, has now entered into the
blueprint stage for Phase 2. This initiative has
a great significance from the perspective of Air India’s
turnaround. The initiative involves implementing the
SAP solution that will integrate and harmonise the
back-end processes of Air India. In a highly competitive
aviation sector and for a large concern like Air India, the
response time of management decisions plays a crucial
role.
The integrated back-end processes will provide a
platform to near-real time and accurate information
on the complete operations of Air India, enabling the
operational staff to take timely decisions. As the project’s
tag line says it will enable Air India to ‘Harmonise,
Integrate and Grow’.
To enable smooth implementation, the project was
divided into three phases. Phase 1, which is on the verge
of completion, was aimed primarily at designing a single
chart of account across Air India and its subsidiaries
and uploading the trial balance. Work on Phase 2 of
the project has been initiated and under it, the basic
processes of Human Resources, Finance and Materials
Management are being designed and will subsequently
be configured in the solution. Phase 3 of the project,
which provides for additional functional components like
Treasury Management, Time Management and others,
is also being commenced.
In an effort to raise awareness about the programme,
sessions to highlight the need, benefits, scope and impact
of the initiative are being held with various stakeholders.
Designing the ‘To-Be’ Processes
The blueprint phase involves designing the various
‘to-be’ processes of the organisation, while analysing
the company’s business scenarios, master data and the
organisational structures and fitting it into the pre-
defined processes within a solution, like the SAP-ERP.
There are close to hundred processes that have been
identified by the core team composed from Air India and
IBM.
Each process is being defined, discussed, documented
and continuously reviewed. The technical requirements
and data migration requirements are also being defined
in this phase. The output of this phase will feed the next
one which is called the realisation phase, where the SAP
will be configured and customised as per Air India’s
requirements.
Core Team Set Up
A core team has been constituted from Air India
and its subsidiaries for this initiative. It comprises
representatives from various functions and legal entities
of Air India. Process owners from various functions have
been identified. The core team with due buy-in from
process owners will finalise the business processes that
will be in turn configured in the SAP solution. The core
team is responsible for harmonising the processes across
the organisation and co-ordinating with SMEs across Air
India to facilitate gathering of all requirements.

(GITM) organised by the Goa
Mart
Tourism Development Corporation
(GTDC) from October 21 to 23,
2011 was inaugurated by the Chief
Minister of Goa, Mr. Digamber
Kamat.
Air India was the airline partner
for this event, which was attended
by a host of dignitaries. The Air
India office in Goa was instrumental
in handling the reservation and
ticketing of international and
domestic buyers and delegates. A
total of 60 international and 250
domestic tickets were issued here to
facilitate delegates travelling from
various parts of the world and India
to Goa.
Air India also participated in the
event as an exhibitor. More than 200
people, including buyers and sellers,
visited our stall at the event.

Anacondas,
considered to
be one of the
rarest species in
the world, were
transported on
board flight AI 274
from Colombo to
Chennai and then
onwards to Mumbai on AI 674 on November 24.
The four green-coloured, two-feet-long baby
Anacondas, (two males and two females), were flown into
Chennai from a zoo in Sri Lanka and were then taken
to Mumbai. The snakes were then transported by road
to Ahmedabad’s Kankaria Zoo. The Anacondas, which
are native to South America, were carried in a specially
packed container, in an aircraft compatible for such
transportation, in compliance with IATA regulations for
carriage of live animals.

types of special cargo, including a rare
endangered female tomistoma crocodile ‘False
Ghariyal’ on its flight from Ahmedabad to Chennai
on April 16, 2010.

I
n the wee hours of October 22, at the dizzying height
of 31,500 feet, the passenger cabin of AI 187 Delhi –
Toronto was turned into a makeshift delivery room.
In the tail of the aircraft, a truly miraculous birth took
place while the aircraft was overflying Kazakhstan.
The commander of the flight, Capt. Kapil Kohal, was
in constant touch with Air India Ground Controllers at
IOCC, from the time Mrs Kuljeet Kaur started showing
signs of a possible delivery. An alternate contingency
plan to divert the flight either to Dubai or if there was
time, to any other preferable online station of Middle
East or Europe was discussed with the commander, but
the final decision was left to him.
At 2344 UTC, the commander informed that there

Conservation Award
for Air India
ir India has been making continuous efforts to
conserve the environment and save energy. The
organisation’s efforts were once again recognised by the
Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the Ministry of Power,
when it conferred the National Energy Conservation
Award 2011 on Air India.
The award was received by Shri Rohit Nandan,
CMD, from Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, Union Minister
for Power. Air India was  awarded the Second Prize in
appreciation of its achievements in Energy Conservation
in the General Category Sector for the year 2011. The
awards recognise innovation and achievements in
conservation and help to raise awareness that it plays a
big part in reducing global warming.

baby had been born on board and since the mother and
child were doing well, he was proceeding to the original
destination Toronto. The only medical equipment on
board was a first-aid box.
It is not everyday that a doctor gets the opportunity to
deliver a baby at the height of 32,000 ft.To perform the
task without the comforts and amenities of the labour
room required an Herculean effort. “But I had the
support of an accomplished team of crew members,” said
Dr Balvinder Singh Ahuja, a paediatrician who made
the delivery possible on board. The newborn’s family has
named her Akashleen, to commemorate her unique place
of birth. “I am very happy and want to thank Air India, the
doctors who delivered my granddaughter, and above all
the Almighty, who saved the life of both,” said Amarjeet
Kaur, Akashleen`s grandmother.

AI introduces Star Performer Awards
T
o encourage employees and to reward good
performance, a staff motivational scheme, ‘Star
Performer of the Month’ has been introduced for
average monthly on-time performance aimed at 85 per
cent and above for staff from operational departments,
i.e. Commercial, Catering, Ground Support and
Engineering, positioned at airports in the six metros,
i.e., Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore
and Kolkata.
The selected staff will be named ‘Star Performer of
the Month’ for these six airports, while for other
stations, the award will be given to the entire
station and the selected station will be called
‘Star Performer Station of the Month.’
The scheme for contribution to attaining
average monthly on-time performance
of 85 per cent and above will have the
following salient features:
1. Title of the Scheme:
a. Star Performer of the month.
b.Mega Star Performer of the Company.
II. Star Performer Station of the month.
I (a) Star Performer of the month:
One staff / officer (up to the level of Shift
Manager) at each metro station drawn from
Commercial, Catering Section of Customer
Services Department, Ground Support and
Engineering Department posted at the
Airport would be selected as Star Performer of the
Month for each metro station, every month.
Procedure: Target average monthly On Time
Performance at 85 per cent and above for a particular
metro.
The Executive Director of the Region, in consultation
with the Regional Departmental Heads of concerned
departments, would assess and select an employee from
departments mentioned above, based on the following
factors and relative weightage:
Teamwork and attitude to work: 40 marks
Initiative and drive to perform: 30 marks
Ability to meet specified standards
of departures: 15 marks
Ability to attain specified standards
of turnaround of flight: 15 marks
The highest scorer (one employee) at the airport of
each metro will be the ‘Star Performer of the Month’
and will be awarded a medallion/badge and certificate.
The medallion/badge would be a rolling one and would
be passed on to the next ‘Star Performer Of The Month’,
for the subsequent months.
I (b) Mega Star Performer of the Company:

In case an employee who has already been awarded,
and gets highest weightage again in the subsequent
assessment periods, he would not be given the award
again. However, he will be given a certificate of excellence
to be placed in the personal file and upon getting three
such certificates in a year, he will be awarded ‘Mega Star
Performer of the Company’ and be awarded one of the
proposed prizes indicated at points (vi) or (vii) mentioned
under the reward.
The employee who has been assessed second in the
assessment process would be ‘Star Performer of
the Month’ and will be given the award.
II. Star Performer Station of the
month
In cases of non-metro stations in a
particular Region, the award will be for
the entire station, i.e., ‘Star Performer
Station of the Month’. A rotating
shield will be given to the station
achieving average monthly 85 per cent
and above OTP along with other defined
parameters.
The Executive Director of the Region, in
consultation with Regional Departmental
Heads of the concerned departments, will
select the station for the award on the
basis of OTP and performance parameters
for the station in question.
The Reward:
(i) A medallion embossed with ‘Star Performer of
the Month’ which the employee will display on his/her
uniform.
(ii) A certificate of excellence from the Executive
Director to be handed over to the employee along with
the medallion/badge.
(iii) A photograph with the caption ‘Star Performer
of the Month’ to be displayed on the notice board at the
work place of the employee (back office area).
(iv) The name and photograph of the employee
receiving the award at different locations and in case of
station, its name, will be published in ‘Magic Carpet’ by
the Corporate Communications Department.
(v) An announcement to be posted on the intranet to
highlight the employee’s/station’s achievements.
(vi) Three days free stay with family at any holiday
home of the company for ‘Mega Star Performer’, or,
(vii) Two days free stay with family at Centaur Hotel
Srinagar for ‘Mega Star Performer’.
The award would be given away to the employee/
station latest by 7th of the succeeding month.
The motivational scheme will be effective from
December 1, 2011

CMD visits Chennai
C MD Shri Rohit Nandan paid his maiden visit to
Chennai on December 9, 2011. On arrival, he
inspected the domestic and international terminals
at Chennai Airport. Later, he had a meeting with
the Departmental Heads at the Airlines House,
Meenambakkam, followed by a sales review meeting.
Thereafter, an Open House Session was organised
wherein a cross-section of employees discussed
personal and organisational issues with the CMD. He
gave a patient hearing and promised to look into their
problems. The CMD also highlighted the problems being
faced by the company in the Open House and requested
the employees’ support to overcome the same. ED (SR),
Shri Sunil Kishen, along with ED (IR), Ms. Vineeta
Bhandari, and ED-Personnel (O), Ms. Deepa Mahajan,
were also present.
Cognizant wins AI Tourism Quiz
Shri Rahul Bhaskar and Shri Shrikant Kolli of Cognizant Technologies (holding

A two-member team, comprising of Shri Rahul
Bhaskar and Shri Shrikant Kolli, representing
the IT giant Cognizant, won the Annual Air India
Tourism Quiz held at Hotel Aloft, Chennai, on October
2, 2011. They were presented with two return tickets
to London by ED (South), Shri Sunil Kishen. The day-
long quiz saw 67 teams, representing various corporate
houses from Chennai and a team from Mumbai,
participate. The quiz, organised by Asia Pacific Tours
in collaboration with Air India, to promote tourism in
the country, is conducted every year to mark World
Tourism Day on September 27. The First Runner-up
team comprising Shri Gopal Kidao and Shri M Shankar
from Madras Metallurgical Services won two return air
tickets to Paris and the Second Runner-up team of Shri
V Ramakrishnan and Shri Bharath Ram of KPMG won
two return air tickets to Dubai.

India has made several improvements to make air
travel more pleasurable and invited the winners of the
Tourism Quiz to experience the change, while travelling
by the airline.
Special flights
S outhern Region operated special flights from
Coimbatore on October 10, November 6 and
November 8 and offered special fares for travel on these
flights. To operate charter flights from Coimbatore to
various destinations, positioning flights needed to be
operated. Similarly, after return of the charter flights
to Coimbatore from various destinations, special fares
were offered for travel from Coimbatore to Chennai on
October 17, November 8 and 10, 2011.
Performance parameters
A ir India, Southern Region, showed an increase in
seat factor on the domestic front from 69.40 per
cent in October 2011 to 70.80 per cent in November
2011. Similarly, seat factor for the flights operated on
the international sectors has increased from 68.70 per
cent in October 2011 to 73.04 per cent during November
2011.
Floral tributes to Dr. B.R.Ambedkar
E D (SR), Shri Sunil Kishen, paid floral tributes to
Bharat Ratna Dr B R Ambedkar on his 56th death
anniversary at Airlines House, Chennai, on December
6, 2011. He recalled the services rendered by Dr.

Integrated Booking Office in Chennai
T
he back office of Commercial, Finance, Corporate
Communications and IT departments of the
erstwhile Indian Airlines located in the left wing of
the Raja Annamalai Building have been moved to the
right wing on the first floor and share space with the
erstwhile Air India, effective November 30, 2011. With
this, the front and back offices of Commercial, Finance,
CC and IT will be functioning under a single roof.
Earlier on October 31, 2010, the Reservations office of
the erstwhile Indian Airlines, located on the ground
floor, had moved to the left wing of erstwhile Air India
reservations. With this shifting, a total area of 25,981
sq.ft. have been surrendered.

T he Vigilance Awareness Week was observed from

showed a good growth. The domestic seat factor for
November 2011 was 84 per cent, an increase of 12 per
cent compared to 72 per cent in October. Domestic
market share jumped to 19 per cent from 18 per cent
in October and capacity share, which was 17 per cent
in October, rose to 20 per cent in November 2011.
Northern Region earned a revenue of Rs 2.79 crore
from group business with a yield of Rs 10,360 per
passenger in November 2011, increasing from Rs 2.21
crore group business done in October 2011 with yield
per pax of Rs 8,749 only. The Region has a corporate
deal with 209 corporates.

Improving performance parameters
T he average seat factor for domestic flights for the
period September-November 2011 for Mumbai was
74 per cent while for the entire region it was 73 per
cent. The average number of passengers carried from
Mumbai for the same period was 4833 per day while
for the region it was 6887. The on-time performance for
domestic flights ex-Mumbai was 77 per cent while for
the region it was 73 per cent. Meanwhile, the sales and
marketing team in Mumbai has been focusing on group
movement to increase revenue generation. Army group

Pooja In Engineering complex

T wo of the 24 Airbus A319 aircraft had recently been
grounded at Kolkata due to shortage of engines,
APUs and several other components. This could have

LMS training for Cargo employees
jeopardised route planning and led to major disruptions
in flight schedule. It was almost impossible to conduct
the mandatory periodic major checks of these aircraft
by grounding them during the day. The major checks
address issues like carried forward defects, cabin
maintenance (viz. replacement/washing of aircraft
upholstery, cleaning of cabin, toilets and galleys),
cargo hold maintenance and general appearance of the
aircraft and hold the key to ensure airworthiness of
the aircraft. Facing this crisis, the Major Maintenance
wing of the region rose to the occasion and conducted
the checks during the night without disturbing the day

A s a part of the integration process, employees of

cargo section from the erstwhile Indian Airlines
will be switching over from the existing automated
system to the state-of-the-art UNISYS system called
Logistics Management System (LMS) for their entire
cargo operations, including sales and marketing. This
system is a web-based end-to-end solution, which
caters to both Air India’s international and domestic
network for efficient airport operations and online
bookings by cargo agents. A training programme
for six batches was conducted at Regional Training
Centre, Mumbai, from October 19, 2011, for all cargo
staff of Mumbai and the Western Region. Rebecca
Birwadkar, (TO) Cargo Sales and Marketing, and
Ashley Rebello, Sr.T.S, imparted the training. From
the feedback received from the staff, the LMS system is
user friendly and all are looking forward to the change.
The erstwhile Air India switched over to the new system
from November 23, 2011. A training programme for
cargo agency staff will also be held soon.

helpers, Kolkata was able to overcome the crisis. During
a period, spanning over a fortnight, Major Maintenance
was abuzz round-the-clock, carrying out eight ‘A’ major
checks and six APU changes during the night.  Five ‘C’
checks (4A plus P3) were also done during the day. Well

at NTA, Dum Dum, on November 4, which was attended

Improved performance
C oncerted efforts by all departments concerned helped
us earn a revenue of Rs 40,76,818 from operating
non-scheduled flights for October and November 2011.
The On Time Performance clocked was 88 per cent for
Kolkata and 67 per cent for the region in October. For
November, the OTP was 76 per cent for Kolkata and 63
per cent for the region. Our market share was around
21 per cent in these two months, second only to Indigo
on competitive routes for flights ex-Kolkata.
Port Blair abuzz with activity
T R Roy, Station Manager, Port Blair, receiving a memento from the Andaman

D uring October 2011, Port Blair operated five
charter flights on the Kolkata/Port Blair/Kolkata
sectors earning a revenue of over Rs 1 crore. From
September to November, four charter flights were
operated for the Army on the Coimbatore/Port Blair/
Coimbatore sector and four for the Chennai/Port Blair/
Chennai sectors to accommodate officers of the Defence
Academy, earning substantial revenue. On November
20, 2011, Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(ACCI) had organised the ‘Andaman Marathon’, with
renowned actor and rugby player, Rahul Bose, as
brand ambassador. Air India offered complimentary
tickets being the co-sponsor of the marathon. Mr Bose
also participated in the marathon. In recognition and
appreciation of our sponsorship, ACCI presented Air
India with a memento.
SANGAM meet
A s part of the SANGAM-SAP ERP project awareness
and orientation programme, a one-day session

was conducted at NTA, Dum Dum, Eastern Region,
on November 14, 2011, by the SANGAM-SAP ERP
Project Headquarters team headed by Shri P S Negi,
GM-Projects Management and officials from IBM. The
programme was informative and appreciated by all. The
first half of the session covered SAP awareness, change
management and orientation of the MMD (Materials
Management Department) module for non-MMD
departments and IM/PS (Investment Management/
Project System), as with the implementation of
SANGAM SAP ERP, all company-wide contracts, cost
and expenditure will be captured through the SAP
system. Over 26 officers participated in the presentation
along with ED East.
Meeting with agents
E xecutive Director (ER), Shri R Dayal, along with
Officiating GM Sales and Marketing, Shri S
Mishra, and his team as well as officials from the
Finance Department held an interactive meeting with
leading travel agents to strengthen mutual relations.
The meeting, held on December 23 at Airlines House,
Kolkata, was attended by 14 top agencies wherein
various pertinent issues were discussed.

Hyderabad Hummings
Sales effort generates revenue
T he Sales and Marketing Team at Hyderabad, guided
by Station Manager, Shri K S Reddy, and Passenger
Sales Manager, Shri S V R Shastry, managed to clinch
a deal with the National Police Academy, Hyderabad,
for travel on the Hyderabad-London sector. A batch of
80 IPS officers travelled from Hyderabad to London
and back in Business Class in December 2011. The elite
group was provided special handling at all airports. On
the return leg, their requests to be routed via Paris,
Frankfurt and London was also agreed to. The revenue
generated from this group was over Rs 92,00,000.

from amongst those submitted by 41 candidates from

Air India wins Surjit hockey tournament

T
he All India Surjit Hockey
tournament is the Blue
Riband of Indian hockey in the
North. This is the most prestigious
tournament in India wherein only
12 of the best teams in the country
are invited.
The tournament was played on a
league-cum-knockout format with
four pools of three teams each.
The AI team was put in Pool D
along with the Corps of Signals and
Punjab and Sindh Bank, the former
winners of this tournament.
In the first match against the
team from the Corps of Signals, the
Air India team won the match 3-2,
with goals from Birender Lakra and
Rahul Shilpkar.
In the second match against
Punjab and Sindh Bank, AI won

A high-level Government of India defence delegation, led by Hon’ble

Defence Minister Shri A K Antony travelled on Air India to Tokyo recently

Air India recently played host to a group of underprivileged children from
the Rotary Club of Mumbai Lakers at its simulator facility. The visit was
well coordinated and the children were welcomed by the training staff
on duty, Capt Leela Singh and Capt Rajashree. The trainers spent a lot of
time explaining the nuances of flying to the children. The entire session
was both thrilling and exhilarating, to say the least. This was a once in a

and here they were sitting in a cockpit and learning how to fly a plane!
