4 . Explain with clear diagram –real image formation by a concave lens.

5 . How can you deviate a parallel beam of light in reverse direction with a total reflecting prism ?

6 . Prove the relation between image speed , object speed and magnification in case of reflection by a
spherical mirror.

7. Prove the relation r = 2 f for a convex mirror.

8. What will be the position and magnification of the image if an object is placed at a distance of 2f in front of
a convex lens (show it using general equation of the lens) Answer : at a distance of 2f & magnification 1

Answer the following questions (3x9)


9 . Explain the vision of a fish under water when it looks upward if it is at a depth of 5m from the surface of
the pond and the refractive index of water is 4/3 . Answer : 5.7 metre

10. Prove that the apparent depth of a container if it contains two different liquids is d 1/1 + d2/2
11 . Prove the general equation of a lens for a concave lens .

12. The refractive index of the material of an equilateral prism is √𝟑 . Find the minimum deviation produced
by the prism . Answer : 60 °

A convex lens of power 2 D and concave lens of power 4D is placed in touch with each-other . Find the focul
length of this combination in cm . Answer: -50 cm

13 A convex lens forms a real image as the same size of an object at a distance of 40 cm from the lens .If we
want to produce a two times magnified virtual image of that object , where should we place the lens from that
object ? Answer: 10 cm

14.Write down the relation between the critical angle , the refractive indices of the rarer medium and the
denser medium .Considering the expression for deviation for a light on prism and the condition for
minimum deviation ; find a relation between the angle of a prism and the refractive index of the material
of the prism. (1+2)

15 . Define conjugate foci for a mirror ? Establish Newton’s equation for curved mirrors. (1+2)

16.Light is incident on a parallel glass slab (of thickness t) at an angle θ . If the angle of incidence
is very small and the refractive index of glass is  ,prove that the perpendicular distance between the
incident and the emergent ray is t θ ( - 1) / 

17 .Two convex lenses of focul length f 1 and f2 are in contact with each other . Prove that if their equivalent

Answer the following questions (5x2)

18.If the distance between the object ( of length L) and the screen is fixed ,if two images of length
L1 and L2 are formed on the screen for the two different positions of the lens , then prove that
L = √ ( L1 L2 )

Prove that for a thin prism , angle of deviation  = ( - 1) A (3+2)

19. The refracting angle of a prism is 60 ° , and the refractive index of the material of the prism is √(𝟕/𝟑)
.Find the minimum angle of incidence for which there is a grazing emergence of the ray along the opposite
refracting surface of the prism ? Answer : 30°

If the critical angle of a medium is 45 ° , find the speed of light in that medium .

(3+2) Answer : 2.12x108 m/s
