Drought is 

a prolonged dry period in the natural climate cycle that can occur anywhere
in the world
Drought is caused by a lack of rainfall, causing serious water shortages. It can be fatal.
Unlike other extreme weather events that are more sudden, like earthquakes or hurricanes,
droughts happen gradually.
Drought is a dangerous condition which decreases the quality of life. It is termed as a
natural disaster with harmful effects.
EFFECTS
1) Drought can limit the growing season and create conditions that encourage
insect and disease infestation in certain crops
2) seawater intrusion
3) lower water levels in lakes and reservoirs
4) Droughts affect agriculture and lessen food production.
5) Reduced soil quality. Increased quantity of dust.

PREVENTION
1. Desalination of water.
2. Rainwater harvesting.
3. Drip irrigation.
4. Harvesting water from air – technology has been developed by MIT.
5. Genetically modified crops.
6. Plant more trees.
7. Recycle organic waste.
