Title: Lower Secondary Mathematics Notes

Chapter: Unit 2
Topic: Properties of Two-Dimensional Shapes
Curriculum: Cambridge Checkpoint
Grade: 7
Authors: Ric Pimentel, Frankie Pimentel, Terry Wall
Subject: Mathematics

Instructions: Study the definitions and concepts provided, review the important
questions, and solve the numerical examples. After that, attempt the 10 practice
questions for a better understanding of the topic.

1. Definitions:

a. Two-Dimensional Shapes: Shapes that have only length and width but no thickness or depth.
b. Properties: The characteristics or attributes that define a shape, such as the number of sides,
angles, and symmetry.
c. Regular Polygon: A polygon with all sides and angles equal.
d. Irregular Polygon: A polygon with sides and angles that are not equal.

2. Important Questions:

a. How can you classify two-dimensional shapes based on their properties?

b. What are the properties of common two-dimensional shapes such as triangles, quadrilaterals,
and circles?
c. How can you identify and describe congruent and similar shapes?

3. Numerical Examples:

Example 1: Finding the Perimeter of a Rectangle

Find the perimeter of a rectangle with a length of 6 cm and a width of 4 cm.
Solution:
Perimeter = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (6 + 4) = 2 × 10 = 20 cm

Example 2: Finding the Area of a Triangle

Find the area of a triangle with a base of 8 cm and a height of 5 cm.
Solution:
Area = 0.5 × base × height = 0.5 × 8 × 5 = 20 cm²

Example 3: Identifying Congruent Shapes

Determine if the two rectangles with sides of 3 cm and 5 cm, and 5 cm and 3 cm, are congruent.
Solution:
Since both rectangles have the same side lengths, they are congruent.

4. Practice Questions:

1. Find the perimeter of a square with a side length of 7 cm.

2. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of 9 cm and a width of 6 cm.
3. Identify the type of triangle with angles of 30°, 60°, and 90°.
4. Find the perimeter of a regular pentagon with a side length of 5 cm.
5. Calculate the area of a parallelogram with a base of 10 cm and a height of 8 cm.
6. Identify the type of quadrilateral with opposite sides equal and parallel, and opposite angles
equal.
7. Determine if the two triangles with side lengths of 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm, and 6 cm, 8 cm, and
10 cm, are similar.
8. Calculate the circumference of a circle with a radius of 7 cm.
9. Find the area of a trapezoid with bases of 8 cm and 12 cm, and a height of 4 cm.
10. Identify the type of polygon with six sides and six angles.

After completing the practice questions, check your answers and review the material to ensure a
thorough understanding of the topic.
