CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Figure 1.1. Conceptual Framework

Figure 1.1 depicts the conceptual framework that outlined the variables of the study,

which will be utilized in developing a design solution with the aim of redeveloping and

enhancing the existing traditional orphanage design and improving the living conditions of

orphans in orphanages. The primary users of the space are orphan children who are placed in

an orphanage due to losing a parent/s. Due to the integrated introverted and internalized

environment, the traditional concept of orphanages, however, hinders the optimal growth of

children, leading to a passive and static role for architecture in the psychological development

of orphans. The framework employs three concepts with the objective of redeveloping and

improving the traditional orphanage design: integration of natural elements that will serve as

the natural learning round for orphans while improving the overall atmosphere of the facility;

integration of curvilinear design that fosters positive emotion among orphans; and lastly,

integration of child-friendly environment with participation and socialization as the main

focus. This provides a greater knowledge of how to accomplish the goals of progressive

physical, emotional, and psychological growth for orphans, as well as how to design an

architectural setting that serves the best needs of children.

The study will utilize a qualitative approach in determining the factors that affect the

development of children in orphanages. To gather in-depth information and data that will be

essential to establishing the objectives of the research, the researcher will collect primary data

from first-hand sources through semi-structured interviews. The interviewer should be able to

obtain the perspectives and insights of social workers, orphan guardians, and representatives

for children's well-being in order to assist in identifying the primary issues that need to be

addressed and generating solutions that can be translated into design. Part of the

semi-structured interview will also focus on determining the perspective of chosen

respondents on integration of curvilinear design and nature in the overall design of the

orphanage.

If possible, the researcher will also use a quantitative approach in determining the

insights of orphans with the objective to know more about the relevance of integrating

curvilinear design in the overall design of the orphanage. This will consist of a questionnaire

with objective answers.
