3 million worth of smuggled

cigarettes in Palawan

The Bureau of Customs Sub-port of Puerto Princesa in Palawan province has destroyed 207 boxes and
3,507 reams of smuggled cigarettes valued at P5.3 million.

Puerto Princesa Port Collector Gladys Fontanilla-Estrada led the operation from Aug. 16-18 in the
presence of the Philippine National Police Maritime Group, Philippine Coast Guard Palawan, and the
National Bureau of Investigation Puerto Princesa District Office.

The shipments were shredded and soaked in water at the Palawan Flora and Fauna Watershed Reserve
in Irawan, Puerto Princesa City in accordance with Section 1146 and 1148 of the Customs Modernization
and Tariff Act, upon the recommendation of the Condemnation Committee led by Deputy Collector
Filemon L. Mendoza Jr. and Auction and Cargo Disposal Unit Chief Jeremias C. Leaño.

Earlier, the shipment was ordered forfeited by District Collector Ma. Rhea M. Gregorio in favor of the
government for violating customs laws, rules, and regulations.

Estrada assured the public that they shall further strengthen border security to prevent the entry of
illegal goods into the country and reminded them not to patronize these products as they harm
legitimate businesses as well as the national economy.
