DA admits garlic in short supply

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday reported a shortage in garlic supply in the country,
saying for 2022, the agency expects at least a 63,000 metric ton deficit in the commodity.

During a hearing of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food, the DA said the country's total garlic
supply for 2022 is pegged at 82,950 metric tons.

Based on data, the local production for the year is at 4,817 MT.

On the other hand, the country imports at least 78,132 MT of garlic while the total garlic demand is
pegged at 146,850 MT.

Quezon Rep. Wifrido Mark Enverga, chairman of the panel, questioned the insufficient supply of garlic.
