Unit 2 - How are organisms adapted to survive?

Nervous System

1. Complete the blank spaces with the appropriate words:

The nervous system is composed of the _______________________ (CNS) and the

________________________________ (PNS). The CNS is made of the
_____________________________ and the ________________________. The cells
that make up the Nervous System are called ___________________ and are
responsible for carrying the ________________________, which are electrical
messages.

2. The following picture represents a diagram of a reflex arc.

a) Add these labels to the diagram: pain receptors, sensory neuron, motor
neuron, muscle fibers, synapse in the central nervous system.

b) Describe the path taken by a nerve impulse that links a painful stimulus to a
response.

c) Explain the term reflex action.

3.

An experiment was performed to test the effects of

drinking alcohol on the speed of response. One person
held the top of the ruler. The thumb and forefinger of a
second person were positioned alongside the bottom
of the ruler. The first person released the ruler and the
second person caught it as quickly as possible. The
position of the second person’s thumb and forefinger
on the ruler was recorded, as shown below.

This experiment was conducted five times before

drinking an alcoholic drink and then repeated 20
minutes after drinking an alcoholic drink.
