Flame of Hope 2023

Montana Law Enforcement representatives
and friends are about to hit the streets,
highways, and byways of Big Sky Country
to carry the “Flame of Hope” for Special
Olympics Montana.
In addition to fulfilling their duties of
enforcing speed limits, maintaining order,
and keeping our state safe, these officers
are part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run
(LETR) whose mission it is to raise funds
and awareness of the Special Olympics
Movement worldwide. This fundraising
helps to provide year-round sports training
and athletic competition in a variety of
Olympic-type sports for children and adults
with intellectual disabilities.
The destination is the opening
ceremonies of the 2023 State Summer
Games in Bozeman on May 17th. The relay
has ten starting points around the state with
hundreds carrying the Flame of Hope over
2,400 miles where the arrival and lighting of
the cauldron will officially begin the games!

Do you think spring is finally here? It feels like it
but cross your fingers. There are a lot of athletes that
would like to get back into their sporting event.
Glasgow golfers have been itching to get back
into the swing of their schedule. The Scotties have
had their last two tournaments postponed. First
it was the Wolf Point Invite on Thursday, then the
Conrad Invite for Saturday was postponed.
The Scotties will be in action Friday when they
host the Glasgow Invite at Sunnyside Golf Course.
This is a good chance for the fans to see the Scotties
in action. Saturday Glasgow is in Malta at Marian
Hills Golf Course.
Glasgow track and field athletes were in action
Tuesday at the NE MT Makeup Meet at Scottie Field.
First-year coach Paul Yoakam put this meet together
when the Saco-Whitewater Invite for last Friday
was canceled and the Sidney Invite for Saturday
was postponed till May 6. The Scotties will travel to
Great Falls Saturday for the Belt-Fairfield Invite at
Memorial Field where the Northern B Divisional will
be held May 20.
The Scotties softball team will be in Conrad for
the Mid-Season Eastern B-C Invite. Glasgow will
take on Colstrip on Field 8 at 1 p.m. Friday. Then
at 5 the Scotties play Shepherd. Saturday they play
Conrad at 11 a.m. and Shelby at 3 p.m. All four games
are conference.

The Torch Run in Montana began in 1985. Each
year, local Montana law enforcement raise several
thousands of dollars for Special Olympics Montana
athletes. In 2022, the Montana LETR raised $399,886.76
— $13.24 short of $400,000! — for local athletes
and broke $9 million dollars raised since the start of
Montana’s LETR program.
In addition to the Torch Run, law enforcement
representatives throughout Montana participate in
several special fund-raising events including the Polar
Plunge and Tip-a-Cop. Our Premier Law Enforcement
Agency Sponsors of the Montana Torch Run includes
the Montana Police Protective Association and Town
Pump.
The LETR for Special Olympics is an annual
international program that involves thousands of law
enforcement personnel raising millions of dollars
annually to benefit Special Olympics programs in the
United States and abroad. The Torch Run is the largest
grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle for
Special Olympics and has raised over $946 million since
its inception in 1981.

In The Did You Know That Department?

You see these men and women that are in our
cemeteries across our great nation are honored by small
American flags on memorial days and they gave their all
to make sure that you can continue as American citizens
and reap the bounty of our great country. It is now up
to you, the living to give a hoot as to what will happen
next. The burden is totally on our shoulders!
I hope that you choose wisely!
“Yea Though I Walk Through The Valley Of the
Shadow of Death……”
Have you ever noticed coins on a gravestone, and
wondered why they were there? When a U.S. service
member or loved one leaves a coin on a gravestone it
has special significance. Though the meaning of this
custom has changed over time, it’s a tradition with a
long history. The idea of leaving coins with the departed
dates back as far as the Greeks and Romans.
According to Greek mythology, the River Styx
separates the living from the dead and Charon, the
ferryman of Hades, will not carry your soul across
without a payment. So unless you had a coin, your soul
would be doomed to spend 100 years in solitude along
the shore.
This is why family members and loved ones
would place coins in the mouths or over the eyes of
the departed, in order to ensure safe passage into the
afterlife.
Romans left coins of different denominations on
graves. Each coin conveyed a different meaning. U.S.
service members carried on the tradition after the
Vietnam War. Soldiers used it as a way to communicate
with their fallen comrade’s families without having to
say a single word. Since the politics surrounding the
Vietnam War were so controversial, this nonverbal
practice allowed soldiers to pay their respects without
risking a debate with the family of the fallen. Each coin
on a soldier’s grave tells a different story.
• Leaving a penny indicates that the person who left it
knew them from military service.
• A nickel on the grave, means they trained in boot
camp together.
• If you see a dime on a soldier’s grave, it signifies that
the person who left it served in the same company
as the deceased and you will buy him a drink on the
other side.
The change is a way of saying he’s good for it. It’s
common practice for the cemeteries to eventually pick
up the change, and put it towards grave maintenance for
less fortunate departed soldiers.
Lin and I do it all the time. When I visit Ohio, I
always go to the grave of my best friend, Joseph Alan
Lofton, who was shot down in Vietnam as a helicopter
pilot. I sit by his grave and eat a Payday candy bar, with
Alan. In the Boy Scouts on camping safaris his mom
would always pack us our favorite candy bars.
We did a lot growing up together as many of you
have with your friends, but he went on to graduate from
college and could have been exempted from ‘Nam’ but
that was not Alan! He went to helo school and became
a rescue pilot and there are way too many lives that he
saved.
After the news came of his demise, his mom and
dad, who I grew up with were very bitter toward the
Vietnam War and voiced it. I could only hug them as
another son since they lost theirs. I am not the only one.
You all have some memory of lost loved ones.
I have a bitter taste of that war and mixed emotions
about Vietnam Vets, thanks to John Kerry, now a former
Senator.
You see, when the riots and demonstrations of
‘Nam’ came into sight during my stint in Washington,
D.C.
We were in riots and demonstrations on a weekly
basis. Some of us slept on cots in our riot gear in the
basement of the U.S. Capitol building instead of going
home after an 18 hour day! Were we scared? You betcha,
we were!
