ENGINEERING STANDARD

1. Scope
This specification covers fundamental requirements for fusion welding (hereinafter referred
as welding) applicable to automotive parts specified in HMC or KMC drawings for the
quality of fusion weldments, and fabricators must be drawn up the process standard in
accordance with welding machines and belongs, when this specification applied.

2. Application
This specification is applicable to gas welding, stick welding, CO2 arc welding, and inert gas
arc welding when applied to automotive steel parts assembled with carbon steel, high
strength steel, low alloy steel or stainless steel.

4. Definition of Welding Term


Carbon Equivalent(%): the value calculated in terms of
Ceq = C% + 1/6Mn% + 1/24Si% + 1/40Ni% + 1/5Cr% + 1/4Mo%
Others shall conform to JIS Z3001, ISO 2553 (Welding Terms) : equivalent to KS B0052.

5. Classification of Welding Quality


Welding quality shall be classified as either "safety" or "general".
Requirements for each quality are different. Classification is given in table 1.

6. Welder Verification
(1) Welders shall pass verification tests by either HMC or KMC Inspection Departments or by
an organization authorized by HMC or KMC

(2) Rankings are based on skill. Welders producing safety classified welds per shall have the
highest ranks.(Par.5)

(3) Welders shall maintain welding skills though periodic education or welding technology
verifiction examination.

(4) The inspector of "safety" classified parts shall be certified by HMC or KMC Inspection
Teams.

7. Equipments and Welding Procedures


7.1 General Requirements
(1) All equipment and material required for welding such as a welding machine, torch, rod,
wire, etc. shall be properly maintained, stored and
used in normal conditions.
(2) In case of arc welding, jigs and fixtures shall be properly grounded to earth.
7.2 Certification of a Welding Machine
A welding machine and incidental equipment which have passed equipment
certification shall be used.
7.3 Establishment of Welding Conditions
Welding conditions shall be established before welding parts and the weld quality shall
conform to Par.9. Established welding conditions shall be communicated by posting within
easy sight of working personnels near a welding machine. The welding conditions shall be
submitted for authorization if it is required by HMC or KMC Inspection Department.
7.4 Procedures
(1) Unless otherwise specified , shape of welding joint shall conform to
JIS Z 3601(Recommended practice for manual arc welding-steel sheet, equivalent to
KS B0876) Par. 2.3.
(2) Parts to be welded shall be cleaned by removing harmful scale, oxide, oil, grease,
and other impurities before welding.
(3) For materials with a carbon equivalent over 0.43%, preheating and maximum hardness
requirements shall be agreed upon by the Design and Inspection Department for every part.
(4) Unless otherwise specified, the heat treatment specified on the drawing shall be carried
out after welding.
(5) For safety parts with weld hardness greater than HRC 35(Hv 345) or for general parts
with hardness greater than HRC 40(Hv 392) that are plated or dipped in an acid for
descaling, shall be treated for hydrogen embrittlement using the process outlined in MS600-03.
(6) The location of tack welds shall be constant from part to part and its slag shall be
removed.
(7) When stick arc welding is interrupted the slag between the weld beads shall be
removed.

(8) When flux is used, it shall be removed.


(9) Weld spatter shall be removed if it affects appearece, machining, assembly, etc. It is
not necessary to remove slight spatters. And it shall be avoided to stack at hardfacing
parts or springs.
(10) Weld beads shall not be removed by fileing or grinding except where indicated on
a drawing or when required for assembly.

e 8. Welding Materials
(1) Materials to be welded are to be free of hot rolled scale unless otherwise specified.
(2) Welding rod or wire shall be free from harmful defects such as peeling of covering
material, cracks, soil, moisture absorption, etc. and kept in a dry place. Welding rod
or wire shall conform to following standards.:
8.1 Low Carbon Steel
(1) Welding rods used in low carbon steel welding shall pass JIS Z3210, ISO 7989 (Covered
electrode for mild steel sheet, equivalent to KS D7011) or JIS Z3211(Covered electrode
for mild steel, equivalent to KS D7004)
(2) For gas and inert gas arc welding, welding rod shall pass JIS Z3201, ISO 636
(Gas welding rods for mild steel, equivalent to KS D7005)
(3) CO2 arc welding wire shall pass JIS Z3312, ISO 14171 (Steel Wires for CO2 gas shielded
arc welding, equivalent to KS D7025)
8.2 Medium Carbon Steel, High Carbon Steel, High Strength Steel and Low Alloy Steel
(1) When heat treatment after welding is specified on the drawing, welding rods shall be
the equivalent material to the matrix or shall have characteristics to satisfy the
requirements.
(2) Unless heat treatment after welding is specified on the drawing, covered electrodes
shall pass JIS Z3212, ISO 18275(equivalent to KS D7006) and welding rods for
gas welding and inert gas arc welding shall pass JIS Z3201(equivalent to KS D7005)
8.3 Stainless Steel
(1) Welding shall be covered arc, TIG, or MIG weldings. For MIG welding, Ar gas shall be
used as inert gas. Several percent of O2 or CO2 gas may be added to the inert gas
to increase the depth of penetration.
(2) Welding rods and wires used for welding similar grade of stainless steel shall pass JIS
Z3221, ISO 14343 (Stainless steel covered electrodes, equivalent to KS D7014)
for covered arc welding and JIS Z3321, ISO 14343 (Stainless steel welding rods and
Wires, equivalent to KS D7026)for MIG welding. Welding rods and wires used for welding
various classes of stainless steels shall conform to table 2, unless specified in drawings.

(3) Welding rods and wires used for high weight percent of Cr and Ni stainless steel shall
be used for welding dissimilar stainless steels. Welding rods and wires specified in
Par.8.1(except for gas welding) or Par.8.3(2) shall be used for welding stainless and low
carbon steels.

e 9. Weld Quality
Weld quality shall satisfy the requirements outlines in section 9.1 through 9.8 by visual
inspection, macro structure test, magnetic particle test, liquid penetration test and in case of
indication, radiographic test, ultrasonic tests. Test methods shall conform to followings.
JIS G0565 (Methods for magnetic particle testing of ferromagnetic materials)
JIS Z3104, ISO 10675-1 (Methods of radiographic test and classification of radiographs for steel welds)
JIS Z3106, ISO 10675-1 (Methods of radiographic test and classification of radiographs for stainless steel welds)
9.1 Tolerance of Weld Length
The weld length of continuous welding shall be within 0 throught +20% of a value specified
on the drawing. The weld length of intermittent welding shall be within 0 throught +20% of
a value specified on the drawing and the pitch (the length between the center of an
intermittent welding bead and the center of a next bead) shall be within ±20% of a value
specified in drawings. Unless otherwise specified, first and final intermittent beads shall
be welded to the ends.
Remark : Weld length shall be measured the joined section by melt and satisfied
the table 3 and 4.
9.2 Undercuts
The depth of an undercut shall not exceed 20% of the thickness of the thinner sheet or
plate and 1.0mm when the thinner sheet or plate is 5mm thick or over. The total length of
an undercut shall not exceed 20% of the total weld length. The depth of an undercut in
designated safety welds shall not exceed 10% of the thickness of the thinner sheet or plate
and its total length shall not exceed 10% of the total weld length.

9.3 Overlaps
An overlap shall not exceed 10% of the bead width and its total length shall not exceed
20% of the total weld length.
The overlap in designated safety welds shall not exceed 5% of the bead width and its total
length shall not exceed 10% of the total weld length.
9.4 Blow Holes and Inclusions
Blow holes and inclusions shall not be formed in a line. Each size shall not exceed 20% of
the thickness of the thinner sheet or plate with a 1.0mm maximum. Their number shall not
exceed 4 in a bead length of 25mm.
9.5 Craters
A crater(a recess developed at a weld end) shall not exceed 20% (10% for safety welds) of
the thickness of the thinner sheet or plate.
9.6 Cracks
Welds shall be free from cracks which can be observed visually, through magnetic particle
inspection, or by liquid penetration test, etc.
9.7 Amount of Penetration and Excess Metal
Unless otherwise specified, the amount of penetration and excess metal shall conform to
table 3 and table 4. Excess molding metal shall not be cut off.
9.8 Weld Strength
When the drawing specifies weld strength, weld strength shall be specified on the drawing.
9.9 Slag
In case of MAG welding, each size shall not exceed 3 mm maximum. Also their number
shall not exceed 3 in a bead length of 25 mm.

10. Daily Process Control


10.1 Check of Welding Machine
Before welding, welding machine and sub apparatus and welding condition shall be
checked. In case automatic arc welding, situation of torch and wire feed condition shall be
checked.
10.2 Inspection of Weld
After welding, worker shall remove slag and spatter, check that shape of the bead and
penetration. Blow holes and cracks shall conform to Par.9. Verify motion of
welding machine.
10.3 Quality Inspection of Pilot Parts
Unless otherwise specified, pilot parts to be subjected to endurance test shall be assured
that they satisfy the requirement of Par.9 by a microstructure and macroscopic test,
hardness test, magnetic particle inspection, and liquid penetration test, etc. and shall
present the report. Cut place for macroscopic test shall separate 10% of all weld
length from arc start place.

12. Prohibition
Prohibition of use of heavy metals
Lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium shall not be included in parts or
materials. However, those elements are partially allowed in materials or parts that are
mentioned in MS 201-02.

13. Others
(1) When copper plated parts are welded, a consultation shall be held with the Sheet Metal
Development TFT for the possibility that intergranular cracks may occurred.
(2) Important portion shall be treated same as safety portion.
(3)If there are any doubts regarding this specification, contact the Sheet Metal Development
TFT, Reseach & Development Division at Hyundai Motor Company & Kia Motors.
