Yellow Star - 5th Grade Lesson Plan
Yellow Star - 5th Grade Lesson Plan
Because this Friday is Holocaust Remembrance Day, I would like to discuss the
Holocaust, vocabulary, and reading an easy fiction story that has true facts about the
time (realistic fiction). We will also tie this into non-fiction by using a short video about
King Christian, who helped the Jewish people during this time.
We will start the lesson by presenting a slideshow (attachment) with vocabulary words.
students will participate in Dictionary Wars (dictionary use is a skill that 5th grade
students have practiced). For Dictionary Wars, students will race to find the word in the
dictionary. We will compete boys against girls. We will start a discussion on genocide
(the word will be displayed on the screen) We will look up the following words :legend,
resistance, struggle
We will read Yellow Star (Easy Fiction/Realistic Fiction).
Critical Thinking Questions: I will be asked while reading and students will be
encouraged to respond.
After reading,we will view a short video of King Christian (he is mentioned in the story).

Extension:
Heroism can be expressed in many ways. Discuss what it means to be a hero and
who students consider to be heroic. In this story was King Christian X a hero?
Though we think that his wearing of the yellow star was a legend, in what ways, if
any, would you still consider him a hero?
The teacher will explain how to design a concept map using technology of King
Christian X
Teacher led/whole group-students will design their own map using canva.com
Teacher will facilitate while students create their own and then share with peers.
Students will be able to learn and use this tool across all subject areas.
