Chapter - Listening

INSTRUCTOR: Layne Gneiting

Summary

● We all believe we are good listeners but are we actually? In chapter 8, it

discusses the difference between hearing and listening. Listening is active

and engaging when hearing is not. Most of us hear when we should be

listening. Listening involves hearing, attending, understanding, and

responding.

Quotes

● “The importance of listening skills applies to both our work and our personal

lives.” (p. 199)

○ This quote stood out to me because it is super important to learn and

accept criticism through the act of listening. Listening is a skill that

takes a long time to develop.

● “On the other hand, we deny a person's endorsement when we signal that

his feelings are wrong or unimportant.” (p. 198)

○ This quote stood out to me because we oftentimes disregard others if

the information they are talking about isn't relevant to the listener.

Human Code

● This chapter reveals that humans have a hard time disivering between

listening and hearing. Listening is considered a strength and hearing is a

weakness. Listening is the active and participant version of hearing.

Hacking the Human Code

● This chapter allows us to hack into the human code by listening rather than

just hearing. Listening gives you the ability to hear and connect deeper

through actively listening and participating in conversation.

Experiment

● For this week's experiment, I decided to listen to people rather than just hear

them. Sometimes I have the tendency to block others out and in doing so, I

end up just hearing what they said instead of listening to them.
