by an alpha virus called Spread by an infected Aedes ageupti


as the arbovirus 2
& Aedes albopictus
Background & Epidemiology:

• First identified in the United


Republic of Tanzania in
1952.
• First isolated in 1953 by
Mason and Haddow. 3

• First CHIKV outbreak was


recorded in 1963 in Calcutta.

About the Causative Agent

Causative Agent:

Chikungunya is caused by the chikungunya virus


(CHIKV) it is an RNA virus.

Family : Togaviridae (Member of alphavirus genus)

Incubation Period: 3-12 days


Symptoms

• High Fever : 40°C /104°F,


• Joint pain (Ankle, wrists, knees or
phalanges)
• Joint swelling
• Rash
• Headache,

• Muscle Pain
• Fatique

Diagnosis:
• Isolation of Virus
• Demonstrating of four fold or greater rise in antibody titer.
• ELISA testing foe IgM antibody.

• Diagnosis by RT-PCR Test

Treatment:
• No Vaccine available for prevention for CHK 11
• Control is possible by avoidance of mosquito bite
• Reduction in density of vector.
• Treatment is mainly symptomatic by anti-inflammatory drugs.
e.g. acetaminophen and ibuprophen.
• Steroids are not to be used.
