Program Planning Form

AHC Museum Education Class
Created 12 April 2023

Program Name: Nobody Gives Us Sovereignty: Busting Stereotypes & Walking the Walk -
Suzan Shown Harjo Keynote Speaker and Event

Proposed dates/times: Sunday, November 5, 2023; 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Location: On-Campus; Woodruff Auditorium, McElreath Hall (Atlanta History Center)

Name of program developer: Sarah Grace Rogers

PROGRAM BASICS

Brief Program Description: This program is centered around Keynote Speaker, Suzan Shown
Harjo, giving a talk on Native American Heritage, Activism, and Visibility. The talk will be held
in the Woodruff Auditorium. Tickets provide entry to hear the keynote speaker as well as entry to
the museum with any remaining time. Guests have the option to purchase the add-on of lunch
from Souper Jenny and engage in a Meet and Greet with Suzan Shown Harjo.

Educational Objective: The object of this event is to educate the public on Indigenous
stereotypes and how to disprove them. It also aims to increase Indigenous visibility and engage
Indigenous people in increased activism within their communities and with the wider world. The
program’s goal is to encourage conversation and discussion on modern issues Indigenous people
face to increase awareness and efforts toward equity and restitution. It also seeks to create
connections between people of all backgrounds and stimulate connections and networking
amongst the audience members.

Connection to Current Exhibits, Collections, and Programs: This program will connect to the
“Native Lands” exhibit at the Atlanta History Center. While the gallery focuses primarily on
Indigenous people of the past, this program will bring Indigenous people back to the present to
show they are still here and that the work is not done.

Relationship to Atlanta History Center Strategic Plan: As the United States approaches its
250th anniversary, the Atlanta History Center seeks to focus on the meaning of democracy and
incorporate it into their research and storytelling. It is important to acknowledge the role that
Indigenous people played in the creation of the United States, across the centuries, especially the
role that colonization and Indian Removal played in their dislocation and in the growth of
America. This program will highlight the place that Indigenous people are in today because of
the role settlers and later descendants played in pushing them out.

The AHC Strategic plan also highlights the importance of bringing people together, connecting
cultures and people to create shared histories, and increasing perspectives of history to better
2

understand what we have done right and wrong and what we can do in the future. THis program
will bring together hundreds of people to encourage discussion and collaboration in an effort to
increase awareness and visibility of Indigenous people.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Detailed Program Narrative:

Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne & Hodulgee Muscogee) is executive director of the National
Congress of American Indians and president of The Morning Star Institute. She has facilitated
legislative development and is a founding trustee of the Smithsonian National Museum of the
American Indian. Speaking on Native American Heritage, Cross-Cultural Understanding, Social
Justice, and other issues, she has been a decades-long advocate for Native American rights,
protecting sacred places, and the return of millions of acres of Indigenous land. She received the
Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, in 2014.

This program centers around her as a Keynote Speaker, talking specifically on Native American
Heritage, Activism, and Visibility. The budget outlined could allow for the Atlanta History
Center to fly her to Atlanta (from New York) and provide a hotel and per diem (in addition to the
speaking fee).

Tickets to the event provide entry into the Keynote Speaker event. Guests may also add on
Lunch (from Souper Jenny) and a Meet and Greet with Suzan Shown Harjo for an additional
cost. The Meet and Greet will be an opportunity for one-on-one or group interactions and for
photos with the speaker.

The Ticket will also allow guests to explore the museum and grounds on lunch, during the meet
and greet, until closing time. Tickets are sold online at the Atlanta History Center Website on a
First-Come, First-Serve basis.
