  WORDS AND PHRASES   165

Exercise 9–2.  Word Classes

For each word that is in bold, indicate its class — noun, pronoun, verb,
adjective, adverb, conjunction, or preposition. Write the word next to the
class on the lines following the passage.

Many trees on campus are not native to the local area. Eugene
can support a greater variety of trees than many places because its
climate is moderate enough to easily accommodate trees from colder
and warmer areas. This led to the campus becoming an arboretum.

However, planting nonnative trees displaces local trees. For future tree
selections on campus, a stronger emphasis on native species would
eventually turn the campus into a richer learning environment. One
student commented thoughtfully that her favorite tree was the Eastern
black walnut, near Gerlinger Hall.
