3 billion people globally don’t have access to a handwashing
facility in their homes. In Indonesia, 5 million people don’t have
access to water (18% of the rural population) and 70 million
lack basic sanitation (36% of the rural population). Yet the
simple act of handwashing with soap for at least 20 seconds is
proven to fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-
19).
The pandemic has highlighted the global clean water crisis,
and the vital role of clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to our
overall health. Therefore, we’re raising funds to provide
25,000 liters of clean water for those in need.
To get involved, check our initiative to help the people in
Parek Walang, Ile Ape, Lembata.
As reported by the locals in Lembata, most families in isolated
rural areas are still struggling to get clean water since Cyclone
Seroja hit back in April.
And did you know that:
• Most families must travel up to 10 kilometers to buy clean
water from privately run tanker trucks and sometimes they
don’t even have enough water for all.
• They spend an average of 300,000-400,000 rupiah per
month on clean water while the minimum wage is only 1.95
million rupiah?

Do you ever sit and wonder whether the water you consume every day is
clean? Indonesia, being one of the world’s largest archipelagos, enjoys
over 21% of the total freshwater available in the Asia-Pacific region.
Notwithstanding this, Indonesia has been labeled as the country with the
most unfavorable water conditions in Southeast Asia.
Article 5 of Indonesia’s Water Law No. 7/2004 states that “Every
Indonesian has the right to water”, but why is it that nearly one of every
two Indonesians lacks access to safe water and more than 70% of the
nation’s 220 million people rely on potentially contaminated sources?
The isolated East Nusa Tenggara province faces particularly large
challenges. Piping is limited, so some families sources their water from
wells more than an hour’s walk away - and these wells are often polluted.
Such unhealthy conditions mean that they are exposed to a variety of
deadly diseases, many of which are waterborne.
Effecting change in a province is difficult, but we want to make a
difference across East Nusa Tenggara - even if it’s a small one.
Thousands of houses, gardens, fields and possessions are lost and
destroyed. To this day, affected communities in Kupang area still need
physical and emotional support to have their needs met.
Most families can’t go home because their houses are damaged. Children
have lost their possessions, toys, clothing, schoolbooks and sense of safety.
Adults' and caregivers’ ability to earn money has stalled due to rising cases
of COVID-19 infection.
Our deep concern for the continued spread of the disease, along with other
illnesses that can be associated with the aftermath of a cyclone may further
undermine the resilience of the affected population.
We need to show that we care, not just when the cameras are there, but
afterwards when people need support to rebuild their homes and their lives.
For the people of Indonesia and East Timor, Cyclone Seroja is not just a
passing headline, it’s a current and ongoing reality.

Thanks to your donations, we are able to provide 13,200 liters of clean

water, and it’s putting smiles on faces around Manusak, East Kupang.

The illegal wildlife trade is the fourth-largest illegal activity in the world,
following in the footsteps of drugs, weapons, and human trafficking. The
number of cases of illegal wildlife trade continues to increase since it
brings in an extraordinary amount of money, but is rarely prosecuted.
The illegal wildlife trade is classified as a unique category of crime. In
fact, it does not fit within the traditional classification of crimes, such as
crimes against persons or property crimes. Nonetheless, it has been
argued that the true victim in wildlife trades is the society-at-large due
to the involvement of many actors across the world.

The year 2020 provided an opportunity for Indonesia’s improvement for

its wildlife and its habitat. However, COVID-19 has become a global
pandemic where it created significant knock-on effects on economic
and social disruptions. The pandemic, which not only brings anxiety and
worsens pre-existing mental health conditions, is believed as the
consequence of human’s persistent and excessive intrusion into nature
and the vast illegal wildlife trade, and in particular, the wildlife markets.
This issue encouraged us to immediately publish our first INTENSI
bulletin, prepared by the YIARI work unit that focuses on the legal
frameworks of wildlife crime. Additionally, the data and information
presented are analyzed by the experts.
