Diaz made History: Philippines’ First Olympic Gold Medal

The Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, broke the Olympic record by lifting 224 kg. in total,

winning the Philippines ' First Olympic Gold Medal through Women’s 55-kg division Weight lifting

in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Diaz topped World Record holder Liao Qiuyun of the People's Republic of China on her final

set in the clean and jerk and total. Liao made her final attempt at 126 kilograms, but Diaz outdid

her with that final set by lifting 127 kilograms. Prior to winning the gold medal, Diaz had won the

silver medal from the Women's 53 kg. division during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

After completing the record-breaking lift, Diaz burst into tears and embraced her coaches.

Malacañang congratulated Diaz for bringing pride to the nation. “The Palace congratulates Hidilyn

Diaz for bringing pride and glory to the Philippines for winning the country’s first-ever Olympic

Gold Medal “ – Presidential Spokesperson, Harry Roque in a statement.
