Practical 10

Aim- Identification of characteristics of printed documents

Requirements- Printed documents, scales, magnifying glass, microscope etc.

Theory-
Mechanical impressions- It is the impression placed on a piece of paper by a machine or simple
tool.

Printer-A printer is an external hardware output device that takes the electronic data stored on a
computer or other device and generates a hard copy of it.

Types of printer

·        Dot matrix

·        Ink jet

·        Laser

Dot matrix printer-

a)     Class/general characteristics-

·        low resolution printing.

·        Due to impact, while printing the depth of dots can be seen under magnification.

·        Ink is insoluble in water because it is carbon wax based.

b)    Individual characteristics-

·        Missing dots

·        Uneven printing

These cause due to defect in printing head.

·        Misalignment- due to defect in motor.

·        Non uniform printing density/ faint print at some places.

·        Absence of dots- cause due to worn out print head.

Ink jet printer

a)     Class/general characteristics-

·        High resolution printing

·        Depth of the dots cannot be seen under magnification.

·        Over spray of ink in the form of red or green dots.

·        Water soluble ink.

b)    Individual characteristics-

·        Vertically shaky image due to cartridge problem

·        Due to software problem- change in font size, style, design etc.

·        Irregular droplets of ink due to clogging of noozles

Laser printer

a)     Class/general characteristics-

·        High resolution printing

·        Toner is used as ink

·        Toner is not soluble in water

·        Glossy effect can be observed in printing.

·        Better quality of print

·        No spreading of ink.

b)    Individual characteristics-

·        Faint character or character void

·        Image defect if sealing tape from the cartridge is not completely removed.

·        Drum is not rotating properly- distorted print

·        Voltage problem can cause defect in print

·        Any defect (Dirt, Dust or Scratch mark) that is found on the drum can be seen in all of the
printouts obtained from that particular printer.

Procedure-

The samples for the printed documents were collected.

The examination was performed.

The characteristics were observed and noted down.

The identification of the printout was performed.

Observation-
Result- Identification of characteristics of printed documents has been performed.
