Effectiveness of Oregano Oil as Mosquito Repellent

I. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Rationale/Background of the study

This study examined the effectiveness of Oregano Leaves “Origanum Vulgare’’ used for its
effective insecticidal properties by using skin products against live mosquitoes ‘’Culicidae’’. The
research is conducted by putting entreated skin into a mosquito enclosure, to examine if it is
effective as an insect repellent.

The oregano was discovered for its active component against mosquitoes, and for the many
benefits which is beneficial for health was known. Oregano (Origanum Vulgare) is the most
recognized herb as being authentic or original “oregano” throughout the globe. The
phytochemicals in oregano have been linked to the herb’s health benefits, that was produced from
the plant usually to aid in their resistance to infections by fungi, bacteria, and plant viruses. Some
phytochemicals have been utilized as traditional medicines while others have been employed as
poisons.

The majority of commercial repellents are made using chemical ingredients. Because of their
negative effects on plastic and synthetic fabric as well as their toxic reactions, such as allergy,
dermatitis, and adverse effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, it has been determined
that chemical repellents are not safe for human health and should be used with caution.

Therefore, the concept of employing natural mosquito repellent products as an alternative

to creating new ecofriendly repellents could be a cooperative way to reduce the negative impacts
on the environment and human health. The risk of transmission is increased during rainy seasons,
which typically occurs during the month of May-November. There are roughly 400,000 Filipinos
are affected by the dengue disease. Another disease was also evident brought by the mosquitoes
(Crisis 24). According to the DOH, malaria prevalence in the Philippines has drastically decreased
from approximately 50,000 cases in 2003 to 6,120 cases in 2020. Additionally, the nation has
claimed a 98% decrease in malaria-related deaths, from 162 in 2003 to 3 in 2020.
Therefore, preventing mosquito bites is one of the best ways to lower the likelihood of
contracting a disease.

1.2 Statement of Objectives

1. To prevent widespread diseases brought by the mosquitoes
2. To make a thin seal between affected area and away from environment whenever
indoors and outdoors, and
3. To minimize skin irritation of the area insect’s bites

1.3 Statement the Problem

There are many people who live in uncomfortable environments because of an increase in the
quantity of insects like mosquitoes.

Because plants are a rich source of bio-active phytochemicals that are risk-free and biodegradable into
nontoxic byproducts, which might be tested for insecticidal effects and mosquito repellent, interest in
plant-based repellents has recently increased.

The main issue is whether wild Origanum vulgare has enough insect repellant for short-term use. Some
products have lasting effects at some points, and the repellent was indisputably there for a considerable
amount of time. Thus, it should also have a long-lasting effect to be classified as a successful product.

1.4 Statement of the Hypothesis

Ho: The mosquito repellent skin product is useful to prevent the spread of sickness brought on by
dangerous mosquitoes, residents can benefit from using skin products that repel mosquitoes.

Ha: The mosquito repellent skin product is not applicable to be used for people who can
experience skin irritations, should not use the mosquito repellent skin product. Depending on how
it should be utilized.

1.5 Significance of the study

This will help the elderly since it will immediately make insects gone, saving them from
having to use lung-damaging insecticide sprays or travel long distances. Instead, put the insect
repellent somewhere else. Due to its pleasant scent, lack of danger, and high organic content,
people with lung conditions won't be affected. Medical professionals can gain from this since it
may aid them in their research into diseases like dengue that are brought on by bug bites, and they
can also recommend it to those who need insect repellents. People who live close to polluted areas
Since mosquitoes, flies, and other insects are common in these areas, people require this to avoid
such inconveniences and lead regular lives. Homeless population have probable risk factor for
exposure

to mosquito bites is the absence of intact window/door screens. Draw attention to the need for
screen repairs and make resources available for doing so available. Everyone has the same
experiences; utilizing the environment will lead us to safety.

1.6 Scope and Limitation

The goal of this study is to constantly ward off mosquitoes and only mosquitoes. Other
insects, such as flies, that contribute to the same issue are not included in this study. The oregano
leaves used to make the mosquito repellent were the main subject of the investigation. The main
goal is to determ.ine how well it works to deter mosquitoes from landing on skin or to reduce the
risk of being bitten.

Review and Related Literature

The Origanum Vulgare is traditionally considered as an excellent antiseptic and insect

repellent. The antibacterial and pest repellant properties of oregano oil are well regarded. It
contains various active chemicals that have been shown to be quite efficient at keeping
mosquitoes away, including carvacrol, thymol, and -terpinene.

According to the findings of the review of Iranian ethnopharmacological literature

published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research (2010), Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
can also be used as an insect repellent for flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches as well as an energy
producer, diuretic, stomach booster, nervous system reliever, laxative, and anticancer.

A study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture of the Society of
Chemical Industry (2009) demonstrates that oregano works just as well as synthetic insecticides
to prevent infection by the common beetle Rhizopperthe dominica, which is found in stored
cereals. Not only can oregano oil also doesn't have any of the negative outperform synthetic
alternatives, but it environmental impacts that come with synthetic insecticides. Scientists are
increasingly looking at natural alternatives quantities required for agricultural industry use due to
growing resistance to synthetic insecticides, potential environmental damage, and new
government directives on changes to the way chemicals are registered. The plant species oregano,
which belongs to the Lamiaceae family, is well known for its natural insecticide.

Origanum Vulgare L. is commonly utilized aromatic plant, in part because to the essential
oil it contains. The medicinal properties of Origanum vulgare L. intestinal, respiratory, or
dermatological diseases are included in essential oil (OEO). Numerous researches have
documented and validated the antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-
inflammatory, anticancer, therapeutic effects for skin problems, along with antihyperglycemic and
anti-Alzheimer activity. (Adelina Lombrea, December 2020).
