Au T 10003379 World Ocean Day Differentiated Reading Comprehension Activity - Ver - 1
World Ocean Day was originally proposed by Canada in 1992 at the Earth
Summit, but it wasn’t recognised by the United Nations until December 2008.
At that time, the United Nations renamed it ‘World Oceans Day’. In 2021 The
Ocean Project, the organisation that promotes and coordinates World Ocean
Day globally, decided to drop the 's'. This is to reflect that there is only one
ocean that reaches across the entire planet. The tagline for World Ocean Day
2021 is ‘One Ocean, One Climate, One Future – Together’.
A healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate crisis that our
world is facing. Our ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen. It also
transports heat from the equator to the poles, which regulates our climate and
weather patterns. It is critical that we keep our ocean clean and healthy so that
it can continue to perform these important tasks.
World Ocean Day is a reminder that we are all responsible for caring for our
ocean and our planet, and that everyone can make a difference by making small
changes to their lifestyle and habits.

World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day is held each year on June 8th. It is a
special day where people across the world honour the
importance of our ocean. It is also a call to action
for people to take steps to protect and restore the
world’s ocean. In 2019, over 140 countries across
the world participated in World Ocean Day, with
over 2000 events taking place.

A healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate crisis our world is
facing. Our ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen and stores fifty times
more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. It also transports
heat from the equator to the poles, which regulates our
climate and weather patterns. It is critical that we keep our

In 2021, The Ocean Project’s conservation action focus for World Ocean Day is
to support and grow the global movement called ‘30x30’. 30x30 asks individuals
and organisations to call on our world leaders to protect at least 30% of the
Earth’s land and ocean by 2030 and to preserve intact ecosystems and wilderness.
