4. MORTAR AND CONCRETE

Two of the most common materials used in construction are:

mortar and concrete.

• Mortar: is a construction material which is obtained by mixing sand,

cement and water.

4. MORTAR AND CONCRETE
• Uses of concrete:
Concrete is used in the construction of:
- Foundations
- Columns
- Beams
- Walls

Concrete is used in the construction of elements that support

compressive stresses

4. MORTAR AND CONCRETE
• Analyze:
When columns of a building are built, a formwork is placed with
the shape of the column. Inside, a steel structure is placed before
pouring the concrete. What is its function?

4. MORTAR AND CONCRETE
• Analyze:

Concrete is a construction material that supports very well

compressive stress, but quite badly tensile stress and bending
stress. Steel helps to resist these stress (tensile and bending).
