Overfield’s First Grade News

As we conclude our lesson on the five senses, students will complete a project in class
this Thursday and Friday. In this project, students will use the site bubbl.us to create concept
maps of the different functions of the five senses from what they have learned earlier this week.
Pictured below is my example for the class.

Then students will be put into small groups and rotate stations of the five senses. There will be
five stations, each one focusing on a different sense. Throughout this lesson, students will be
using their laptops as journals to record their observations using a google doc form I will attach.

- At our sight station, students will have to locate various objects hidden around the room.

- At the taste station students will be identifying how different snacks taste. They will try
popcorn, sour skittles, and chocolate and identify if they are sweet, salty, savory, sour, or
bitter. If your student has any food allergies please contact me and we will find an
alternative.

- For hearing, students will listen to different types of instruments and learn about
vibrations.
- At the touch station, students will feel a teddy bear, velcro, and tape and identify the
different textures they feel.

- At the smell station, students will smell three “mystery” boxes and identify what they
smell. Inside these three boxes are cotton balls sprayed with different scents:
strawberry, bubblegum, and mint. If your child has any fragrance allergies please notify
me immediately.

After they visit all 5 stations they will reflect with a drawing and a sentence of what they learned.

Parents, please encourage conversations with your children about the five senses this week so
they can see real-world examples in their daily lives. For example, when you’re eating talk about
the different tastes you are experiencing. Or go around the house with them and talk about the
textures of different objects.

If any parent wishes to donate any supplies, which are listed below, for this project
please have your child bring them in on Wednesday or Thursday morning.
Supplies:
