Cartoon Analysis

The cartoon “the American Dream” published by Antonio Rodriguez Garcia in Mexico. This
cartoon deals with the issue that a lot of African American people got killed by police forces
and it shows a serious problem of racial disparities in the justice system in the US.

In the foreground you can see the feet of a dead body which lays on a table with a death note
on it, saying “by: the police brutality”. What strikes the eye is the note which is very unusual
with an American flag on it. The background is neutral and does not show any new information.

The cartoon contains a critical comment on the “American Dream”. The American Dream
should be an opportunity to meet your dreams and achieve success, for everyone no matter
which ethnicity. This is very contradictory and in a way very ironic that you can achieve
anything in the USA but people are at a disadvantage in society because of racism and
therefore inequality.
The cartoon is an example that African American suffer from racism and stereotypes by police
people.

All in all, the American Dream is not equal for everyone and racism and inequality is a fact why
people achieve brutality and disadvantages in life.
