Dīn, Sayf Allāh al-Maslūl ʿAlā al-Mujassimah, Abū ʿAbd
Allāh, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. al-Ḥusayn, al-Rāzī, al-
Shāfiʿī, al-Ashʿarī [may Allāh ‫ ﷻ‬be pleased with him]
al-Imām Ibn al-Subkī:
❝And the Mujaddid of the sixth century is Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī.❞

al-Imām al-Suyūṭī:
❝And the sixth Mujaddid is al-Fakhr— al-Imām al-Rāzī.❞

al-Imām Ibn al-ʿImād:

❝When he goes out, about three hundred people walk with him with
different needs in Tafsīr, Fiqh, Uṣūl, medicine and so on— he was the
Mutakallim of his time. He was granted popularity in his books, and they
spread quickly in all the regions.❞

al-Imām Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah: ❝He is the best of the late scholars and the

countless fields— his Tafsīr amazes every single student.❞

He is the unsheathed sword of God upon the anthropomorphists,

Abū ʿAbd Allāh, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. al-Ḥusayn, most famously by
his title “al-Rāzī”. From his titles also are “Shaykh al-Islām” and “Sulṭān of
Theologians”. He was Shāfiʿī in Fiqh, and obviously Ashʿarī in ʿAqīdah.
He excelled in Fiqh, Uṣūl al-Fiqh, Kalām, Qirāʾāt, Tafsīr, Manṭiq,
astronomy, philosophy, anatomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics,
linguistics, medicine, rhetoric, cosmology, and many more, and was
undoubtedly one of the most influential scholars in Islāmic history.
He was born in the city of Rayy in modern-day Īrān, on the 25th of
Ramaḍān, in the year 544 h. His father was the Khaṭīb of Rayy, hence he
was known as “Ibn al-Khaṭīb”. It is said he was a descendant of Sayyidnā
Abū Bakr or Sayyidnā ʿUmar, though the former is more famous. His first
and most prominent teacher was his father Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn, who in turn was
a student of Ibn Qāsim al-Anṣārī, a student of Imām al-Ḥaramayn. When
his father died, he studied under Kamāl al-Dīn al-Samnānī, and later
returned back to Rayy to study with al-Majd al-Jīlī. The most prominent
students of Shaykh al-Islām al-Rāzī include Quṭb al-Dīn al-Miṣrī (d. 618),
and Shams al-Dīn al-Khasrūshāhī (d. 652). al-Ḥāfidh Ibn Kathīr mentions
that al-Rāzī authored over 200 works, and many of them spread
throughout the horizons in his own lifetime!

The most famous works of al-Rāzī include al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr/Mafātīḥ

al-Ghayb (around 16 volumes), which is arguably the best exegesis of
the Qurʾān in history, as well as many other works such as al-Arbaʿīn Fī
Uṣūl al-Dīn, Asās al-Taqdīs, al-Qaḍāʾ Wa al-Qadar, al-Maṭālib al-ʿĀliyah
Fī al-Kalām, ʿIsmah al-Anbiyāʾ, Risālah al-Ḥudūth, al-Mulakhkhaṣ Fī al-
Manṭiq Wa al-Ḥikmah, Sharḥ ʿUyūn al-Ḥikmah, ʿAjāʾib al-Qurʾān, Sharḥ
al-Ishārāt, Sharḥ Kulliyyah al-Qānūn, Sharḥ Niṣf al-Wajīz, and many
many more.

He passed away on the blessed day of ʿĪd al-Fiṭr, in the year 606
after the Hijrah, aged about 60, in the city of Hirāt in modern-day
Afghānistān, where his shrine is present to this day. May Allāh (‫ )ﷻ‬be
pleased with him immensely and allow us to benefit from his works,
Āmīn.
