-Why we should manage work place health and safety?

There are three reason to manage workplace health and safety

1 MORAL

2 Legal

3 Financial

In financial reason there are two cost involved

Direct cost

Indirect cost

Direct cost –Measurable cost arise directly as a result of a work place accident ,

Example of direct cost

1 Damage cost to building ,equipment and vehicle.

2 Claim cost on employers and public liability insurance,

3 Maintenance cost of plant and machinery,

4 Hospital treatment,

5 Production loss cost ,

6 Absence cost of employee,

7 Fines cost resulting from prosecution by enforcement authority,

8 Staff replacement cost

9 worker sickpay cost,

10 Repair cost to product equipment and vehicle,

INDIRECT COST- ARISE AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE EVENT BUT MAY NOT INVOLVED MONEY OFTEN
DIFFICULT TO QUANTIFY,

INDIRECT COST EXAMPLE,

1 Production delay cost,

2 Accident investigation time and any subsequent remedial action required,

3 Product and process liability claims,

4 Recruitment cost of replacement staff ,

5 Training cost of replacement staff,

6 Loss time of other people such as first-aid staff who helps injured person,

7 Lower employee moral possibly leading to reduced productivity.

Every one responsible for health and safety ,but many responsibility comes lier to employer to
provide,

1 safe place of work,

2 safe system of work,

3 safe plant and machinery,

4 Training, supervision and competent person,

EMPLOYERS RESPONSIBILITY AS PER ARTICLE 19 0F C155

1 Ensure that workplace, machinery and equipment and work process are safe and without risk to
health,

2 Ensure that any physical,chemical, and bio-logical substances are safe and without risk to health,

3 Provide adequate protective clothing and equipment for prevent risk of accident and any adverse
health effects,

EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITY AS PER ARTICLE 10 OF R164,

1 Provide and maintain work place,machinery and equipment and using of working method safe and
without risk to health,

2 Give necessary training and instruction making applicable and use of health and safety,

3 Provide adequate protective ,clothing and equipment with out charges to worker,

4 In a organization particularly working hours ,and restbreaks does not adversely effect occupational
health and safety,

5 Take reasonable practical measures in a view to eliminate excessive physical and mental fatigue,

6 Keep up to date with technical and scientific knowledge to comply with above,

WORKERS RESPONSIBILITY AS PER ARTICLE 19 OF C155,

1 Take reasonable care for their own safety and that of other people ,

2 Comply with all safety instruction and procedures,

3 Use all safety equipment properly,


4 Report any situation that they believe it could be a hazard and they cannot themselv correct,

5 Report any work related accident and ill health,

WORKERS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITY AS PER ARTICLE 19 OF C155,

1 Take addiquate information on action the employer has taken to ensure health and safety,

2 Give right to worker necessary training in safety and health,

3 Give right to worker to consulted by the employer on all matters of safety relating to their work,

4 Give right to worker to leave a workplace that he has to reason to think that presence of imminent
dange to his life and health,and not to be compelled to return until it is safe,

DIRECTOR AND SENIOR MANAGERS RESPOSIBILITY

1 Give the organization to its direction ,

2 Set its priorities ,

3 Allocate resources and appoint competent person,

4 Allocate responsibility ,

5 Are responsible for ensuring that all legal requirements are met ,

THE SHARING RESPONSIBILITY OF JOINT OCCUPIER OF PREMISES

Employers on shared responsibility should communicate to devlop appropriate health and safety
standard and appropriate health and safety policy and procedures.

1 Health and safety policy.

2 Risk assessment

3 Qualification and training record of workers of contractor.

4 Membership of a professional organization.

5 Maintainance and equipment testing record.


6 Previous and current clients.

7 Accident record.

8 Enforement action

9 Adequate resources.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CULTURE

1 POSITIVE SAFETY CULTURE – In a work organization most of the work think and feel that safety is
important for us that is called positive safety culture,

2 NEGATIVE SAFETY CULTURE- In a work organization most of the worker do not give importance to
safety is called negative safety culture,
