Study of the effect of ambient air pollutant
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in pregnant women in
association with Still birth and Spontaneous
abortion.
Introduction:
Dirty air is known to increase the risk of still birth. Still
births were described as ‘neglected tragedy’ by UNICEF.
Pregnancy is a unique condition in which a mother’s immune
system continuously undergoes different changes in
accordance to the development of fetus and signals from
outside and inside the body. The developing fetus is
susceptible to environmental pollutants and studies have
shown the adverse effects of air pollutants on pregnancy and
birth outcomes.
WHO estimated that ambient air pollution was the cause of
3.7 million premature deaths and household air pollution was
cause of 3.8 million premature deaths worldwide.
Literature Review:
A total of 43 studies ,including 35 human studies and eight
animal studies suggest that exposure to air pollutants such as
particulate matter, Carbonmonoxide, Nitrogendioxide,
Cooking smoke are associated with higher risk for still birth
and Spontaneous abortion
