Matilda

Written by Roald Dahl

Play for PYP 2
Characterization:
Matilda (a six year old intelligent girl)
Mrs Honey (a kind teacher)
Miss Trunchbull (a very rude and strict headmistress)
Students
Narrator 1:

Everyone is born, but not everyone is born the same. Some will grow to be artists, or bakers or
candlestick makers. Some will only be really good at making Jell-O Salad. One way or another, though,
every human being is unique, for better or for worse. Most Parents believe their children are the most
beautiful creatures ever to grace the planet. Others approach things with less emotions

Scene 1: School

Narrator 2:

Matilda had always wanted to go to school, because she loved to learn. She tried to imagine what her
new school would be like. She pictured a lovely building surrounded by trees, flowers and swings. It was
Matilda’s first day of school.

Narrator 2:

Matilda's teacher, Miss Honey, was one of those remarkable people who appreciates every single child
for who he or she is.

(Matilda enters her new class room)

Honey:

Good morning to my wonderful students. We have a new student with us today. This is Matilda
Wormwood. Now, you all remember how scary your first days at school were, so I'd like you to be
especially nice to Matilda and make her feel welcome.

Honey:

This is your new friend, Matilda. Make her comfortable.

Class:

Welcome Matilda.

(Song)

Miss Honey:

Well, Matilda. You've come on a very good day, because we're going to review everything we've learned
so far. Two times four is .........? Two times six is …….? Two times nine is ….? Excellent. You've been
practicing. Pretty soon you'll be able to any multiplication, whether it's two times 7 … . Very good. Or 13
times 379.
Matilda:

Four thousand, nine hundred, and twenty-seven.

Honey:

I beg your pardon?!?

Matilda:

I think that's the answer. 13 times 379. Four nine two seven.

Lavender:

WOW!

Joseph:

Simply genius!

Erica:

You’re so good at math!

Honey:

It is! Matilda, you know how to multiply big numbers

Matilda:

I read this book last year in mathematics at the library.

Lavender:

You go to the library? (Shockingly looks at her) I am glad you are sitting next to me… maybe you can
teach us some tricks.

Whole class:

Yes, please!

Narrator 1:

While the whole class was admiring Matilda, suddenly Miss Trunchbull appeared. The whole class froze
and quickly came back to their seats and stood with horrifying expressions.

T-Bull:

Don't breathe at all.

Honey:

Good morning, Miss Trunchbull.

Students:

Good morning, Miss Trunchbull.

T-bull:

SIT!!!! ….. Shoo. I have never been able to understand why small children are so disgusting. They're like
insects: they should be got rid of as early as possible. Now you, front of the class!

T-Bull:

What’s in your pocket? (asking Danny)

Danny:

Nothing Ms. T-Bull.

Next time I tell you to empty your pockets, you'll do it faster, won't you?!?

T-Bull:

Miss Honey, this might be the most interesting thing you've ever done. Sit down! Get up!! (Pointing at
Amanda) Can you spell?

Amanda:

Miss Honey taught us how to spell a long word yesterday. We can spell "difficulty".

Bruce :

She taught us with a poem.

T-Bull:

A poem. How sweet. What poem would that be?

Students:

Mrs. D. Mrs. I. Mrs. F - F - I. Mrs. C Mrs. U. Mrs. L - T - Y.

T-Bull:

What! repeat again (screamed angrily)

Narrator 1:

After Miss Trunchbull left, the whole class wondered why she was so angry all the time. Suddenly they
came up with the idea of visiting her house to find the answers at night.
Narrator 2:
At night Matilda decided to go to Ms T.Bull's to find out what is the reason behind her being such an
agony person.
What she sees is Ms T.Bull is a lonely person who just lives with her cat. She had no one to talk to every
time she used to have chocolates to make herself happy.
Narrator 1:
Next day when Matilda comes back to school she tells everyone about Miss T.bull and what she
observed about her life and why she is so angry all the time.
Miss Honey:
I think we should do something for Miss T.bull to make her happy. we should make her feel special.
Matilda:
I have an idea!
Lavender:
Oh that's great, let's execute the plan and do something good for Miss T bull. I want her school principal
to always be happy.
Narrator 2:
And the whole class started preparing a surprise for Miss T.bull. They set up the auditorium with flowers
and other decoration items. They all brought all kinds of delicious food too.
Narrator 1:
this made Miss Trunch bull very happy and she was never ever angry again. The school became a happy
place. Kindness makes the world go around. It truely changes the environment.
Ms Trunchbull:
Ahhhh! such a lovely gesture. It has absolutely changed the way I thought about things and the way I
felt about myself. Now I feel happier and more satisfied with life. I apologize for such a harsh attitude.

Narrator:
Happiness is completely within your control. Each day we have a choice. We can choose a perspective
that brings light and love to our lives every day.

Song in the end.
