NYANGA DISTRICT DCPC REPORT CALBEN TRUST PVO 14/12 JAN TO MAR 2023 (Q1 of 2023)
INTRODUCTION
This summary report gives details of school fees support given to children of school going age in Nyanga District by Calben Trust in
the period January to March 2023. This includes support for tertiary level children.

The payment of fees is premised on the need to assist the parents/guardians who:
1. are indigent and can barely meet the needs of the child’s fees
2. may have passed on and the child is left without a breadwinner to support
3. have requested to the school authorities for such support
• Selection of the beneficiaries is carried out by a bursary selection committee that is chaired by the Head and has a representative
if the SDC and not less than two senior teachers. While the selection might be subject to manipulation from this composition
(and we know it can be) this is the best way we find usable, and have to content with its attendant challenges.
• The fees support at secondary school covers at most 70% of fees payable at boarding schools. This excludes examination fees.
• Schools receiving this assistance are: Nyangani HS, Nyajezi HS, Nyatate HS, St Monica’s Nyautare HS, Kazozo HS, Bumhira
HS, Kute HS, Crossdale HS, Dandadzi PS, Claremont SS; and Emmanuel HS, Regina Coeli HS, Nyafaru HS, St Mary
Magdalene’s HS, Mt Melleray PS,Nyanga High School.
• Support at tertiary level covered tuition fees and scholastic needs, for up to 70% for students attending State Universities.
Accommodation and related fees are not catered for.
• Students receiving university fees support will have received support through high school. New cases were also enrolled.
University fees support is only up to first degree level.
• Calben Trust is also supporting students at Magamba Vocational college to study skills and trades. This will enable more of the
students supported up to O-Level but failed to qualify to A- level or university to be supported.

NYANGA DISTRICT DCPC REPORT CALBEN TRUST PVO 14/12 JAN TO MAR 2023 (Q1 of 2023)
ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED

• Activities were mainly the processing and disbursement of fees for tertiary students. The few remaining term 1, 2023 fees for less
than five secondary schools are currently being processed for payment. The delay was due to schools awaiting the approvals of
their term 1 fees or sluggish communication by the schools, especially on submitting the 2022 reports.
• Two Leadership workshops were conducted in the months of January to March, targeting Prefects at Nyanga HS Marist Brothers,
Nyajezi HS, Nyatate HS, Mapako HS, Nyafaru HS, St. Monica’s HS Nyautare and Nyangani HS.
• A music festival was conducted in March with children in both primary and secondary schools. This was meant to showcase their
talents and skills to a broader audience. The winning schools received prizes including a term’s fees payment for the participating
students.

COMMENTS

Activities for the next quarter will focus on processing Term 2 school fees payments and fees for vocational students at Magamba VTC,
Kushinga Phikelela and Harare Polytechnic. This will be a new focus for Calben Trust and will gradually see a slight reduction in
university support. The reason for this is to capture those students that might have failed to proceed to A – level or University and offer
them support. This lot makes the bulk of the students that receive high school fees support form Calben Trust, and have largely failed to
find relevant support for further their education. There will be stricter focus on supporting the girl child in pursuing skills training such as
motor mechanics, welding, drain laying, auto-electrics and many more.
