“Theoretical and Software-based Torsional stress analysis of Shaft”
Marks: 10 CLOs: 1, 2 PLOs: 1, 5

Features of Washington Accord Open-Ended Lab:

a) Cannot be resolved without in-depth engineering knowledge.
b) Involve wide-ranging or conflicting technical, engineering, and other issues.
c) Have no obvious solution and require abstract thinking and originality in analysis to formulate
suitable models.
d) Involve infrequently encountered issues.
e) Outside problems encompassed by standards and codes of practice for professional engineering.
f) Involve diverse groups of stakeholders with widely varying needs.
g) High-level problems including many component parts or sub-problems.

Task 1: Torsional Stress and Twist Angle calculation in the shaft

Calculate torsional stress and twist angle in the shaft which is 1200 mm long and has a diameter of 100 mm.
The shaft is fixed at one end. A torque of 14000 Nm is applied on the other end. The material of the shaft is
Alloy Steel with a shear modulus of 79000 N/mm2.

Show your calculations.

Task 2: Solid-Works Simulations

Create Solid-Works simulations study of the given part and generate the report. Show your results.
Steps in creating Solid-Works simulations are:
i. Create Study
ii. Apply material
iii. Apply supports
iv. Apply Loads
v. Solve model
vi. View results

Task 3: Observation & Conclusion

Q1. Will the shaft fail under the given load conditions? Support your arguments with simulation results.
Q2. Looking into the simulation results how much is the twist angle in the shaft? Compare your results with
an Analytical solution.

Report Requirements
Printed Report must include:

1. Calculations where needed

2. Observations and Conclusions
3. Solid-Works Part file with Simulations results
4. Solid-Works Simulations Report file
5. Figures should be labeled
