1. Introduction
Over the past few decades, the Indian economy is growing with dramatic pace. Gross domestic product
(GDP) per capita has accelerated from moderate 3.5% in the 1980s to over 7% during the first decade of
the twenty-first century (Das et al., 2010). The adoption of economic reforms in the early 1990s has
paved the way for India to achieve a higher growth path (Ahluwalia, 1994). Despite the accelerated
growth, the economic gap between India and other developed countries has not narrowed much. The
