INTRODUCTION

1.INTRODUCTION
The Internship help to give an environment to actualize all the knowledge that
acquired in the curriculum and to make familiar to the current industrial scenario.
Organisation play an important role. Owing to globalization, the world has become a
Global Village. Different organizations play different roles and it has its own
importance.
The company which I had chosen for the Internship is ALIND Switchgear Division,
Mannar. It is a well-developed ISO approved company. ALIND produces Cables and
Conductors, Steel wires, High Voltage Switchgears and static relays for different
users. The Switchgears and Transformers which produced by the company are mainly
consumed by the Kerala State Electricity Board and Indian Railway. These products
are not directly consumed by the public, though it is utilized for the welfare of the
people. The company has different departments to control the overall functioning of
the company. At present, the company is owned and managed by the Bombay based
Somani group. A professional board of directors with Mr. Prashant Somani as the
Chairman manages the company. ALIND is a multi-divisional composite corporate
entity has a central marketing office in Chennai.
The internship is conducted to have practical knowledge about various functions and
activities of an organization. Aluminium Industry Ltd is leading Switchgear
manufacturer in India. A careful and detailed study is conducted with the given period
of time. The study is conducted for a period of 15 days from 18th April 2022 TO 6

1.2 INDUSTRY PROFILE

ALIND SWITCHGEAR DIVISION,MANNAR

The Unit which is one of the Manufacturing Division of ALIND was

established in the Year 1969 at Mannar in Alappuzha District of Kerala, India
and commercial operations of the Unit effected from 1970-71. The initial
range of products covered Minimum Oil Circuit Breakers from 2.2 kV upto
72.5kV, Outdoor Oil filled Current Transformers 33kV to 110kV in
collaboration with M/s. Delle Alsthom, France. Subsequently indoor Metal-
clad Switchgear with Minimum Oil Circuit Breakers was added to the product
range in 1974-75. An active collaboration was entered into with M/s. Alsthom
Atlantique, France for the manufacture of 145 & 245kV Outdoor
Porcelainclad SF6 Circuit Breakers.

After having established a good customer base with various State Electricity
Boards in India, Indoor Metalclad Switchgear with VCBs 2.2kV to 12kV and
Outdoor 25kV Single Pole Vacuum Circuit Breakers was commenced in 1984
in collaboration with  M/s. Meidensha Corporation, Japan.  ALIND
Switchgear Division is the first RDSO approved Part-I Regular supplier of
25kV Single Pole/2x25 kV Double Pole Vacuum lnterruptors and Circuit
Breakers to Indian Railways and this tactical advantage continuing.
Substantial numbers of these equipments are in service all over the electrified
sections of Indian Railways and the performance has been well appreciated by
the Railways.

Over the period of years, large numbers of equipments of Minimum Oil

(2.2kV to 72.5kV), Vacuum (2.2kV to 52kV Class), SF6 (110kV to 245kV)
types have been supplied to various Electricity Boards all over India/Abroad
and Public Sector Undertakings like National Thermal Power Corporation,
Indian Railways,  Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation India LTD
(DFCCIL), Metro Railways, Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Power
Stations, Coal Fields, Petrochemical Plants, Industries etc.. The reliability
rating of equipment supplied by ALIND has been very good and they have
successfully withstood the severe service conditions.
Having imbibed the technology from the Collaborators, the Switchgear
Division has ventured out on its own and developed several new products
INHOUSE.

7
In general, the Division is well equipped to cater to the requirements of the
Power Sector in India with products whose quality rating is very well

aisle of ALIND factory. On the glorious day of independence, India made history and
ALIND too.

More than 4 decades ago ALIND pioneered the manufacture of aluminium conductors
in India and for the very first in India that aluminium, a versatile and abundant metal
could successfully replace copper, the conventional power carrier. In fact, this
technology innovation revolutionized the bulk power transmission and distribution of
power in India and hence ALIND calls them "The Power Movers".In 1955 ALIND
core wire and high tensile wires from ALIND thereby marketing a proud niche for
Indian exporters in international market.

2.4 PRODUCT PROFILE

Circuit breaker is the main product of ALIND. Circuit breaker is the most vital
equipment of safety of people and installation in the power system.
1) Circuit Breaker
A circuit breaker is an electrical safety device designed to protect an electrical
circuit from damage caused by an overcurrent or short circuit. Its basic function is to
interrupt current flow to protect equipment and to prevent the risk of fire. Unlike
a fuse, which operates once and then must be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset
(either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation.
Different types of circuit breaker
 T‌ he equipment with vacuum technology
 ‌The equipment with SF6 technology
 ‌The equipment with minimum oil technology

2) Vacuum Circuit Breakers/VCB

It is a kind of Circuit breaker where the arc quenching takes place in vacuum. The
technology is suitable for mainly medium voltage application. For higher voltage
vacuum technology has been developed but not commercially viable. The material
used for current contacts plays an important role in the performance of the vacuum
circuit breaker. Cu/Cr is the most ideal material to make VCB contacts. Vacuum
interrupter technology was first introduced in the year of 1960.But still it is
developing technology. The vacuum circuit breaker is today recognized as most
reliable current interruption technology for medium voltage switchgear. It requires
minimum maintenance compared to other circuit breaker technologies. There are two
types of vacuum circuit breakers produced in ALIND, they are:
‌Single pole circuit breaker
Single pole outdoor VCB for Indian Railways (25KV 52KV CLASS TYPE VSE
5/20). Sturdy design incorporates unique vacuum interrupter designed and
manufactured by M/S BEL, exclusively to meet the stringent RDSO standard.

25
Double pole circuit breaker
Sturdy design incorporates unique vacuum interrupter designed and manufactured by
M/S BEL exclusively to meet the stringent RDSO standard. Tested for 10000
mechanical operations in presence of RDSO representatives.

3.Vacuum Interrupter
A vacuum interrupter is a switching device that uses electrical contacts in a vacuum. It
is the core component of medium-voltage switches. The separation of electrical

26
contacts in vacuum. It is the core component of medium-voltage switches. The
separation of electrical contacts result in a vacuum are, which is quickly extinguished.
Vacuum interrupter is used in utility power transmission systems and in power
distribution systems for railway and industrial plants.

4.Control panel
An electrical control panel, a mechanical device, the current from a source to the other
circuit board connected to the point of transfer. As stated in the National Electrical
Code (NEC) is a switchboard that a panel switches and other electrical safety to the
various instruments, such as circuit breakers are mounted. The electrical power source
may be either a generator or other machine to be the required current feeds.
