CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.INTRODUCTION
The Internship help to give an environment to actualize all the knowledge that
acquired in the curriculum and to make familiar to the current industrial scenario.
Organisation play an important role. Owing to globalization, the world has become a
Global Village. Different organizations play different roles and it has its own
importance.
The company which I had chosen for the Internship is ALIND Switchgear Division,
Mannar. It is a well-developed ISO approved company. ALIND produces Cables and
Conductors, Steel wires, High Voltage Switchgears and static relays for different
users. The Switchgears and Transformers which produced by the company are mainly
consumed by the Kerala State Electricity Board and Indian Railway. These products
are not directly consumed by the public, though it is utilized for the welfare of the
people. The company has different departments to control the overall functioning of
the company. At present, the company is owned and managed by the Bombay based
Somani group. A professional board of directors with Mr. Prashant Somani as the
Chairman manages the company. ALIND is a multi-divisional composite corporate
entity has a central marketing office in Chennai.
The internship is conducted to have practical knowledge about various functions and
activities of an organization. Aluminium Industry Ltd is leading Switchgear
manufacturer in India. A careful and detailed study is conducted with the given period
of time. The study is conducted for a period of 15 days from 18th April 2022 TO 6
May 2022.

1.1 OBJECTIVE OF THE INTERNSHIP
To study the overall organizational structure of the Aluminium Industries Ltd,
Mannar. Some of the objectives are: -
*To study about the working of the company.
*Studying the functions of various departments.
*Help to access a variety of tasks and departments.
*Secure good references and recommendations.
*Help to develop and refine skills.
*Help to expose real life learning experience.
*To get acquainted with the practical knowledge about the overall functions of the
organisation.

1.2 INDUSTRY PROFILE
After having established a good customer base with various State Electricity
Boards in India, Indoor Metalclad Switchgear with VCBs 2.2kV to 12kV and
Outdoor 25kV Single Pole Vacuum Circuit Breakers was commenced in 1984
in collaboration with M/s. Meidensha Corporation, Japan. ALIND
Switchgear Division is the first RDSO approved Part-I Regular supplier of
25kV Single Pole/2x25 kV Double Pole Vacuum lnterruptors and Circuit
Breakers to Indian Railways and this tactical advantage continuing.
Substantial numbers of these equipments are in service all over the electrified
sections of Indian Railways and the performance has been well appreciated by
the Railways.

In general, the Division is well equipped to cater to the requirements of the
Power Sector in India with products whose quality rating is very well
established and accepted by the market.
The substantial emphasis being envisaged for the POWER SECTOR in India
will put the Division in an advantageous position in the future scenario also.

CHAPTER 2
ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYSIS
2.1 COMPANY PROFILE
ALIND, a premier engineering industry in India engaged in multi faced activities was
established in 1946.The company today has 6 manufacturing divisions, 2 Contracting
division and an export division. Their manufacturing plants are located in the states of
Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. ALIND was established in 1946 and commenced
the production in the year 1948. While the entire nation saluted the Indian tri colour
flag and ceremonial guns of the British emperor ramparts of the red fort in Delhi, in a
tiny hamlet named Kundara, the first reel of Aluminium conductors rolled down the
aisle of ALIND factory. On the glorious day of independence, India made history and
ALIND too.
More than 4 decades ago ALIND pioneered the manufacture of aluminium conductors
in India and for the very first in India that aluminium, a versatile and abundant metal
could successfully replace copper, the conventional power carrier. In fact, this
technology innovation revolutionized the bulk power transmission and distribution of
power in India and hence ALIND calls them "The Power Movers".In 1955 ALIND
core wire and high tensile wires from ALIND thereby marketing a proud niche for
Indian exporters in international market.

2.2 ORGANISATION STRUCTURE

MARKETING, SALES AND AFTER SALES
DEPARTMENT
Marketing is responsible for all activities connected with procurement of orders like
send quotations, conduct tender committee meetings. It formulates strategy depending
on market or customer's needs & interact with customers and appropriate them about
quality of the product.
Sales is responsible for the activities like register order, conduct contract review
meeting, timing execution of all contracts, prepare documents related to dispatch of
equipment payment collection and keeping relevant records and all other related
matters.
After sales service is responsible for the activities like, attend to customers complaints
and feed information to various departments. It organizes meetings with concerned
departments on customer care on every month for taking corrective action to avoid
recurrence of complaints.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
The Design and Development department is responsible for the entire functions
connected with the technological, design development and techno commercial aspects
of all the products. The development department provide design for the products and
development of the product. The head of Development department is responsible for
all activities like the collection of all input documents, preparations of general and
specific development, monitoring prototype, manufacturing etc. The head of Design
General is responsible for all activities like collection, Compilations and up to all
input documents. The design and development department are divided into three
categories: Design wing, Development wing and Design Contract wing.

Planning department deal with all the manufacturing and planning work. The orders
from customer are collected by the marketing department and it gives details about the
specification of product to the design department. The design department analyses the
specification of product and hand over to the planning department. The planning
department analyse it and take necessary direction.

PURCHASE, STORES AND CONSTRUCTION
DEPARTMENT
Purchase department is responsible for the procurement of all materials. Purchase and
Construction Department deals with the procurement of raw materials, components,
operating suppliers, tools, spares etc. It also handles collection of inward materials,
dispatch of outgoing goods and civil construction. Store department is responsible for
all activities like receipt of material against documents and stores them in proper
location.

Maintenance department keep the plant equipment for good working conditions to
provide quality products. They Prepare preventive maintenance schedule and carry out
preventive as per the schedule. The department maintain and up keep of equipment
and keep the historical records and it also maintain power or water systems in the
plant, office, canteen, colony etc.

The activities of QA department include incoming material inspection, shop
inspection, final inspection of finished product and quality problems and take
corrective actions. It also includes Periodical calibration of measuring instruments and
test equipment and maintenance of documents.

FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT
The Finance and accounts department maintains all the financial activities of the
company. This department is responsible for recording day to day business transaction
accounting, preparation of various statements regarding stock, receivables etc.
Activities with regard to finance in ALIND are mainly controlled by the chief finance
and subsequently by other managers are obligated. ALIND Switchgear Division
follows the double entry system for keeping and recording the books of accounts. The
main activities covered by the financial department are raising of finance, keeping
book records, management of wages, creating balance sheet and profit and loss
account and pay roll calculation. The department of ALIND is divided into five
sections for carrying out its process, they are:

The head of Machine shop and Fabrication shop is responsible for the achievement of
targeted production, maximum utilization of available time, ensure the quality of
product.
The head of Auxiliary shop and Assembly shop is responsible for final assembly of
products and achievement of targeted production.
The head of Maintenance is responsible for the maintenance of equipment and utility
items.
The head of packaging is responsible for activities like preparation of packing slips,
arrange proper packing, loading and unloading of outward and inward market.

2.3 EMPLOYEE WELFARE
Employee welfare raises the company's expenses but if it is done correctly, it has huge
benefits for both employer and employee. Under the principles of employee welfare, if
an employee feels that the management is concerned and cares for him/her as a person
and not just as another employee, he/she will be more committed to his /her work.
Other forms of welfare will aid the employee of financial burdens while welfare
activities break the monotony of work. An employee who feels appreciated will be
more fulfilled, satisfied and more productive. This will not only lead to higher
productivity but also satisfied customers and hence profitability for the company. A
satisfied employee will not go out looking for other job opportunities and hence an
employer will get to keep the best talents and record lower employee turnover.
ALIND has implemented a number of welfare activities for the employees.
Canteen
There is canteen inside the factory premises which provides food at a subsidized rate
for the employees during the working hours. The workers will be served breakfast and
lunch as applicable prior to reporting for duty.

Annual Allowance
Night Shift Allowance-For duty in the second shift (2 pm to 10 pm)
Dress/Shoes/Washing Allowance -Uniforms and shoes are provided by the
company itself, so no allowances are given for the same but Stitching
allowances are provided. Also washing allowance are given on a per day
scheme.
Milk Allowance-To compensate partially for occupational health hazards, milk
allowance is given as per a mutually agreed rate.
Employees are given all the other statutory allowances and bonuses.
Medical Check Up
Usually, two medical check-ups are done for workmen in moulding, electroplating,
heat treatment, shot blasting, painting, pressure testing, metalizing, inspectors in
auxiliary shop and housekeeping workers in auxiliary shop. Cases referred to super
speciality hospitals will also be paid by the company and conveyance expenses will
also be met by the organisation.

Bachelor accommodation is provided to employees coming from distant places
with a small amount as monthly rent.
Holidays
All employees are eligible for yearly 13 National and Festival holidays in a calendar
year.

Workers are provided with Provident fund, pension and gratuity as per the laws.

2.4 PRODUCT PROFILE
Circuit breaker is the main product of ALIND. Circuit breaker is the most vital
equipment of safety of people and installation in the power system.
1) Circuit Breaker
A circuit breaker is an electrical safety device designed to protect an electrical
circuit from damage caused by an overcurrent or short circuit. Its basic function is to
interrupt current flow to protect equipment and to prevent the risk of fire. Unlike
a fuse, which operates once and then must be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset
(either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation.

Double pole circuit breaker
Sturdy design incorporates unique vacuum interrupter designed and manufactured by
M/S BEL exclusively to meet the stringent RDSO standard. Tested for 10000
mechanical operations in presence of RDSO representatives.
3.Vacuum Interrupter
A vacuum interrupter is a switching device that uses electrical contacts in a vacuum.It
is the core component of medium-voltage switches. The separation of electrical

Vacuum interrupter is used in utility power transmission systems and in power
distribution systems for railway and industrial plants.
4.Control panel
An electrical control panel, a mechanical device, the current from a source to the other
circuit board connected to the point of transfer. As stated in the National Electrical
Code (NEC) is a switchboard that a panel switches and other electrical safety to the
various instruments, such as circuit breakers are mounted. The electrical power source
may be either a generator or other machine to be the required current feeds.

ALIND SWITCHGEAR DIVISION, MANNAR
In 1964, ALIND decided to start a steel factory at Mannar, Alappuzha district, Kerala.
At the starting age they manufactured minimum oil circuit breakers only. Now the
company is also producing vacuum circuit breakers and SF6 circuit breakers.

Management of ALIND is in the hands of board of directors. The board of directors
includes 13 members.

SWOT analysis means to analyse the company's strength, weakness, opportunity and
threat. Each parameter offer macro environment can be opportunity and threats
otherwise strength and weakness; strength is internal positive factor and weakness is
external negative factor. Opportunity is the external positive factor and threats are
external negative factor.

3.1 CONCLUSION
ALIND SWITCHGEAR LTD is manufacturing high quality of circuit breaker and
transformers compared to the industry standard and are having very good reputation.
The company has grown in very healthy place. This is due to the employee morale
than has been developed in the company right from the beginning and also because of
the excellent and the company has got a good plant environment with the technology
and machinery.
It is true that the Aluminium Industries Ltd is running at a profit level. But it
is the duty of the government, employees, management and the public to maintain the
company in the public sector and should not allow it to disappear from the industrial
map of Kerala.
Therefore, by taking some stringent steps such as internal reconstruction,
modernisation, computerization, restructuring of credit policy, international marketing
etc. The company can solve the present economic crisis and can lead the company to
the pinnacle of profit maximization. Thus, the company can discharge the
responsibilities towards public, employees, management and government.
