Developing Oral Language

This article discusses the development of oral language skills in elementary


school native language classes as well as the importance of the mother tongue in
developing oral language in the K–12 curriculum. The main goal of language learning
or teaching is to increase children's oral abilities and mold their speech. Particularly in
our nation's educational systems, primary school pupils receive in-depth instruction
on the issue of mother language. (Gulayim, 2022).

The mother-tongue technique used by the teachers for daily communication


skills helps and supports learners in developing oral language through meaningful
and enjoyable interactions inside the classroom (Gulayim, 2022). In the study
conducted to find the relationship between the use of mother tongue-based
multilingual education (MTB-MLE) and the English learning competencies of the grade
4 pupils, the result indicated that there is a significant relationship between listening
comprehension and writing composition learning competencies and the pupils' mother
tongue. According to the findings, teaching with mother tongue (MTL) instructional
material is more effective than teaching with non-MTL English competencies (Tadeo-
Queroda, 2020).In general, the formation of the individual and all the basic mental
processes (perception, thinking, etc.) are also associated with the development of
speech in children (Gulayim, 2022). One of the main tasks of mother tongue and
reading literacy is to be able to organize, develop thinking, teach thinking, bring up a
healthy child for the future, "Brainstorming," "Cluster," "Venn diagram," "Black box" ","
BBB "method. Other features of mother tongue and reading literacy include correct
reading, increasing vocabulary, teaching broad thinking, improving speech, and
consciousness. According to research, problems with oral language and literacy
develop early in children and becoming harder (and more expensive) to correct with
time (Hempenstall, 2013; Spira, Bracken, & Fischel, 2005). The widespread consensus
is that prevention and early intervention are more effective and economical than
efforts to address long-standing issues (Hempenstall, 2013, 2016). Ehri et al. (2001),
Ehri et al. (2001), Piasta & Wagner (2010), and other reviews and meta-analyses all
consistently show that oral language and literacy interventions aimed at children in
the early years of school are highly effective and possibly cost-effective (Hollands et al.,
2016).
Thus, it is important to emphasize that learners might benefit from using their mother
tongue when taking speech development programs to assist them develop their spoken
language. Students achieve progress through a variety of techniques. For instance, in-
depth research into the topic of speech culture may enable us to enhance our
communication and handle any potential issues. When children begin schooling in a
foreign language, it is essential that they maintain their first language since research
demonstrates that having a strong mother tongue foundation leads to much superior
curriculum understanding and a more positive attitude toward learning. In the
classroom, mother tongue and other languages are employed. Before introducing other
languages, learners build a solid foundation in their mother tongue, which is the
language they understand the best. According to research, kids who have a good
foundation in their mother tongue have better reading skills in their school language.
Their multilingual knowledge and abilities A teacher from Davao City, Region XI,
claims that using Sinugbuanong Binisaya or Cebuano as a medium of instruction
allows teachers to feel comfortable explaining their lectures in detail. Since MTB-MLE
is used as an example, it also helped teachers and students understand the teachings
more thoroughly. She added that youngsters are given the chance to be more
conversant in their home tongue and that they can share and express their ideas at a
young age during a lesson discussion. Additionally, students' reading abilities have
improved when MTB-MLE has been used as opposed to earlier times. The biggest
advantage of MTB-MLE is that learners increased their understanding of classroom
content (increased comprehension), because in their mother tongues they can learn all
the words and they can understand, according to this interview of Teachers from
different regions of the Philippines using their regional languages. The MTB-MLE was
very beneficial to slow learners as well because it was simple for them to understand.
A teacher from Region II (Nueva Vizcaya) who teaches in Tagalog reiterated that some
students can understand the material in the subject areas taught in MTB-MLE easily,
and that learning regional languages in the early grades improved students'
understanding of lessons, allowing them to pick up the material being taught more
quickly. The official language of instruction is Cebuano in Region VII (Central Vizayas).
One of their teachers claimed that MTB-MLE assisted in the process of letting the
students know what to grasp and that it was simpler for the teachers to transfer what
the students needed to understand. The language of instruction is Cagayan Ybanag,
especially in Region II (Cagayan Valley). One of the teachers there claims that making
the courses more participatory helps students learn to read more rapidly in their first
language and increases their sense of pride in their background, language, and
culture.
Therefore, it should be highlighted that mother-tongue language is useful in
helping learners develop their oral language in speech development classes.
Techniques are also a component of the advancements students make. For example,
studying the field of speech culture in-depth might help us improve our speech and
address any shortcomings we may have. It is crucial that children preserve their first
language when they start schooling in a different language since research shows that
having a solid mother tongue foundation results in significantly better knowledge of
the curriculum as well as a more favorable attitude toward school.
