1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
This report contains the inspection result of tube inspection using Phased Array
‐ UT (PAUT) that had been carried out to autoclave 3 & 4 at PT. Sorini Towa Berlian
Corporindo , Pasuruan ‐ Jawa Timur. This document also contains the overview of
theoretical testing method, schedule, and detail report.
1.2 Objective of Inspection
This inspection was carried out phased array UT (PAUT) to find out the defect
of welding joint on Coil as supporting document of Maintenece programs by PT.STBC

3. SCOPE OF WORK
PAUT were taken on the welding joint on Autoclave at PT. STBC. Technical data of the
item was detailed below:

4. OVERVIEW OF PHASED ARRAY
Phased array ultrasonic (PA) is an advanced method of ultrasonic testing that has
applications in medical imaging and industrial non‐destructive testing. Common
applications are to noninvasively examine the heart or to find flaws in manufactured
materials such as welds. Single‐element (non‐phased array) probes, known technically as
monolithic probes, emit a beam in a fixed direction. To test or interrogate a large volume
of material, a conventional probe must be physically scanned (moved or turned) to sweep
the beam through the area of interest. In contrast, the beam from a phased array probe
can be focused and swept electronically without moving the probe. The beam is
controllable because a phased array probe is made up of multiple small elements, each
of which can be pulsed individually at a computer‐calculated timing. The term phased
refers to the timing, and the term array refers to the multiple elements. Phased array
ultrasonic testing is based on principles of wave physics, which also have applications in
fields such as optics and electromagnetic antennae.
Result of Phased Array could be displayed in few sides. B, C, D or S scan shows as
volumetric dimension and its best way to describe form of a defect. That’s why, in weld
defect examination it gives us many information other than another NDE method such
as Radiography testing. Comparing with Radiography testing, Phased Array provide more
accurate data, less of preparation time and incredible speed of inspection. This method
is very useful for maintenance application at power plant and other industries that have
very limited time during their offline maintenance.

One part that common find at power plant are tubes. Tube welding activity in
shutdown program always being concerned by user or client. Phased Array offer
technology to solve this problem through their specific accessories and give more
precision other than Radiography technique. Another benefit using phased array, welder
could continue their activity without any RT activity interruption.
