Ants are amazing collaborators—here are two examples.

Fire Ants
Perhaps one of the most amazing examples of ant teamwork is the ingenious way that fire ants are able to
cope with flooding. If their home is flooded, fire ants will join together to create 1____________________.
They grip tightly to each other using their jaws and legs, and in this formation they can float on the water like
a raft. Some rafts can last up to 3_______________, and it is thought that some of the bigger structures may
have around 100,000 ants. But if you see one, stay well clear because 5________________________. They
are also thought to be even more aggressive than usual when in a raft formation.

Leafcutter Ants
As their name suggests, leafcutter ants work together to gather leaf cuttings and carry them back to their
nests. They are easy to find due to the long lines they create across forest floors. Some lines of leafcutter
ants are around 7_____________ long. Leafcutter ants cut up the leaves using their huge jaws, and each ant
is able to carry around 9___________________________. Once back at the nest, the ants do not eat the
leaves. Instead, they are used as a kind of fertilizer to grow a fungus that provides food for the ants and their
young.
