EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This is an attempt to use and to apply the know theories that we have learn in classroom
into a practical situation. Being a student at UiTM Perlis, it is a part of the curriculum for
everyone to experience a case study project at one point. So, for this purpose, this study
gives an opportunity to research a company which manufactured the same product that want
to develop, which is PING golf G245 iron golf company which currently based in United
States
In the first part of the case study I have gathered some of the general information of the
company which have been selected and have been observed and collected.The information
detailed is gathered through online searching as the brand are quite popular which are their
direct competitors. For the second part of the study, it contains the specialised subject study.
Objective of the case study is to work on the background, organisational structure, products
or services that PING golf provides. Moving on is the technology of PING G245 Iron have
been studied, which is basically a complex Golfing or sporting technology as well as
business, marketing and its operational strategy used on how the company uses it to
promote their products into a larger scale that has reached a worldwide global audience.
Goals dictates what a business wants to achieve. Strategy is an action plan for reaching the
goals. Every business must design a strategy for achieving its goal, consisting of a
marketing strategy, and an effective management.
In this case study, the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of this of real a business
have been analysed by using SWOT analysis. In theory this creates the need and demands
for the existing consumers of this company to overcome and to fulfil their needs of the
product. The improvement and recommendation have been proposed as the better
innovation of the products.
INTRODUCTION
The product that I’ve chosen is the G425 Irons (Iron golf set) from PING from this company
as my research study to learn more about the technology that have been created including
the strength and the weakness of the product. Having good quality golf equipment is an
essential part of creating and enjoying a game of golf. Apart from that, the best golf
equipment can lead to a major win in a tournament.
Everybody loves having the latest trendy thing and this also applies to golfing equipment . It
is not just for the sport competitive reasons but also for the satisfactory aspect of owning the
most latest and most technological sporting equipment. They are many different equipment
and club produced by many companies with different technology characteristics. Every golf
club has it use and its pros and cons. People choose the one that suffices their needs and is
also within their budget range. As with buying other thing price only doesn't justify the
purchase we need to take in consideration of the purpose, size, quality of materials, grips ,
strength and aesthetic requirements when deciding which golf club will best suit the users
need. A solution is now required which is the very reason for composing this study and its
innovation idea for better improvement of the products technology.
1.2 Purpose of the study
The purpose of the case study is to fully immerse into the details of the product and its
company to identify the possible weakness or flaw. Besides that determining the major
problem that exist so that can lead for a better and more improved innovation. Furthermore,
the purpose of this study is to try and solve any problem or failure from the products so that
we may learn from its mistake. Finally the aim of this case study also is to propose for a
new product with better and improved features the will help benefit and satisfy the cut in the
long run and leading to crating a bond between the brand and customer
Solheim began PING golf as a garage business in 1959 because of his frustration during the game
of golf resulted from his difficulty putting with the equipment of that era. The engineer
from General Electric invented a new putter in his garage known as the "PING 1A". Instead of
attaching the shaft at the heel of the blade, he attached it in the centre. He applied scientific
principles to golf club design, which had previously been based largely on trial and error,
transferring much of the weight of the club head to the perimeter.
Ping began as one man's hobby in 1959 and became one of the leading manufacturers of golf
equipment. Ping started off in 1959 as a one-man operation making putters in a garage. Today, it is
one of the most recognised names in golf equipment, with a product line that includes clubs,
clothing, gloves and bags. It still is going strong even after 63 years in the golf industry.

PING marketing strategy is that the end-user wants to have a very fine putter, with the latest in
technology, combined with the ability to be fully customised . This person can be at any skill level,
from the beginner to the touring professional. The primary target segment at first will be the female
golfer, who likes the featherweight touch, different colours , and the personal touch that we can
provide. With millions of golfers and our new technology, we have an opportunity to reach a market
of approximately 26 million recreational and professional golfers.
The golfing consumer is currently exploring the benefits of items made with new technology. This
increased interest in special materials and designs goes hand in hand with a desire for
“personalised” sporting equipment. Golf is a prestige sport; golfing consumers demand personal
attention, high-end products, and a prestige value in their purchasing choices.PING golf is a high-
tech, customised putters will fill these market needs, and consumers will “pull” our product through
distribution channels by demanding access to our high-quality putters.
From the distribution side, PING target market is high end retail golf shops catering to these
targeted end users. They want high-profit margin goods that will draw customers into the store, and
practically sell themselves. They also want the kind of quality product that allows the retailer to
demonstrate his superior knowledge of the sport this encourages consumer trust in that retailer, and
assures repeat business for accessories and other golfing purchases.
With a steadily growing world golfer market of more than 26 million (according to the Sporting
Goods Manufacturers Association), PING niche has been created and it aim is to expand this market
by promoting new technology.
The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association survey indicates that golf now has more
participation than football, softball, skiing, and snow boarding combined. The breakdown of
participation in golf is as follows 1% Professional, 63% men, 32% women , 4% youth, with 81%
recreational golfers. Our products are targeted towards most of the demographics but most
importantly is men golfer and recreational group, because they are the fastest growing segment in
the golfing industry.
PING golf also have multiple brand ambassador who promotes ping golf the social media or
through international prestige golfing tournament. They indirectly promote PING through wearing
and using their golfing equipment. This is a successful way in promoting their golfing equipment
around the world and creating a world renowned golfing brand.
List of some of the sponsored players in PGA Tour which is one one golf biggest sporting event.
PING will sponsor multiple golfers to join in the ranks to promote their equipment and this will
boost their sales. The objective of this sponsorship is to build corporate reputation, positive
brand awareness, and a positive brand image as well as sports sponsorship communication
creates a brand association in the mind of the consumer by linking a brand to the sponsored
activity such as golf and PING .
2.5.3 Operational Strategies
With changing market conditions in the late 1990s, PING began to reconsider its business
model. At that time, golfers who ordered custom equipment from the company waited from
six to eight weeks for delivery. Although custom fitting was valued by PING’s best
customers, the two months it took PING to deliver the custom-fit golf clubs was a
disincentive to some buyers. Hawken, the president, spearheaded an initiative to remake
PING’s production strategy. Hawken led the redesign of production and assembly
operations. These changes cut the time needed to create custom equipment from six weeks
to just 48 hours after an order is received. In addition, the revised process reduced the time
needed to bring a new product to market from two years in 2000 to nine months today. The
Teradata system solution helped PING to better understand outstanding orders, materials on
hand, goods in inventory, and supply chain constraints using the information that helped the
company make the goal of a 48-hour delivery a reality.

3.1.1 Strength
PING golf set model G425 Irons (Iron golf set) has many good characteristic which is also
classified as its strength. First the golf set can be custom fitted or build to fit the players
with the right measurement and it can be fitted by PING agents across the world. This golf
set also has different colour code for general population to identify which golf set is suitable
for their height and type of gameplay. The golf club has a great feeling when used and is
very stable off the face too, with toe and heel strikes maintaining a strong line through the
air. The strong descent angle through most of the set also means it’s nice and easy to control
these irons when approaching greens. The Ping G425 delivers on all these fronts and has a
classy look. The build quality of the clubs are amazing. Many of PING’s materials are made
in China example the titanium heads of woods, for instance but once the individual
components arrive in Arizona, it’s not just a matter of gluing the pieces together and boxing
them up. The assembly process is elegant, thorough, and intricate. Each cub, with its unique
specifications, is tracked via computer and is scrutinised for loft, lie, length, swing-weight,
and so on, by a collection of experts. An important part of custom fitted golf clubs is
matching the proper iron design to your game. From multi-metal, maximum forgiveness
technology to player-style models, PING irons provide a variety of design features to help
lower your scores. Factors such as forgiveness, feel, control, head size and appearance are
important considerations when choosing the iron that best fits your game. Each PING iron is
engineered, manufactured and custom fit with the same quality that has made PING a leader
in iron technology for more than 40 years. The ISO (International Organisation for
Standardisation) standards are internationally recognised. Attaining registration would
provide Ping with a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Ping would be the first
competitor in the golf industry to be registered to both ISO 9004 and ISO 14004 standards.
Ping wanted the benefits of implementing the management systems such as improved
quality, increased environmental awareness, customer satisfaction, and continuous
improvement.
3.1.2 Weakness
Every technology product has it own weakness because nothing is perfect for example PING stock
Gof grips are not the best because it is not suitable in the rain or with sweaty palms that can causes
the golfers to slip and effect their game or performance. Besides that a custom self of PING Iron is
expensive and is not recommended to amateur or golfers who are beginning to play golf. Even
though the custom fitting help improves the gameplay it does not 100% determine the outcome.
Even when having the best equipment at the end of the day the players ability to play properly will
determine the outcome. The PING iron set golf clubs has many many variation and number of golf
clubs. Too many golf club and too heavy to carry for a long period of time and is not suitable for
traveling.Finally Iron golf set usually do not come with a bag and even if it does come with a bag it
would usually be really expensive and really big and bulky that takes a lot of space in the house and
in the car trunk the design of the bag is not ergonomic and not user friendly.
3.1.3 Opportunity
An opportunity that PING need to exploit is by creating a cheaper and afford option for golfers .
Many new and amateur golfers are not willing to invest a large sum of money into a port they will
barely play or only play on the weekends. Cheap irons set are available but not high quality and by
creating this new market of affordable and good quality golfing equipment will open up to more
new opportunities in the golfing market. PING can create and can be the first flexible and modular
golf set that travellers and amateur golfers use. PING can change the landscape 360 degree of
golfing from using many golf club to just only a few, eliminating the multiple golf club and giving
more freedom for players to configure their gameplay. Eliminate big and bulky golf bag at the same
time minimise the number of Golf rod. With the growing amount of amateur golfers PING can use
this opportunity to try out or promote their new product. Can be promoted and issued to the local
golfers or golfing institute . One of the example is via the youth generation of golfers in the
National Golf Academy in University Utara Malaysia (UUMNGA).
3.1.4 Threats
The possible threat faced by the company is the competitors on the same sectors/industries
that produce golfing equipment or golf irons. Having to compete out against the Big 3 golf
brands including Taylor Made, Titleist, Callaway. Having the same market as the big 3 golf
company can be challenging as they might be Ideas are easily copied by other golf
company. Other companies will definitely be direct competitors as a golf company. PING
Iron golf set must therefore allocate resources to update the key values of their products in
order to compete among other major players like Taylor Made, Titleist, Callaway other are
among Iron golf club competitors which sell the same set of clubs. As a result PING must be
innovative in strategising to attract new customers and boost product confidence among
golfers . Finally is the second hand market with the massive increase in popularity of golf
has cause some golfing equipment to be used and sold in the second hand market. The
prices are reasonable for a used set of irons and because of how cheap they are will be a
threat for the company in the long run.
4. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
4.1 Findings
4.1.1 Issue/Problem 1 : Golf grip that does not stick on sweet hands and during rain
PING has a reputation for having unreliable grip which are not that reliable in rainy condition or
sweaty palms. Due to this problem many player opt for other brands of golf grips which is a
nuisance for new player who have already invested money into the golf set. It can also effect the
golfers gameplay because the grip is an essential part of golf and if it does not work properly will
effect the experience and outcome of the game. Besides that a bad golf grip will also lead to blisters
that can cause injury to the skin of the palm in the long run.
One of the weakness of having many golf club is that it would be unpractical for travelling because
the number of golf club is just too many and that adds up towards weight. The typical set of golf
clubs is composed of a combination of different clubs so that the player has one for every
shot the player may be faced with. Clubs come with numbers on them those with lower
numbers are designed so the player can hit the ball a longer distance than the higher-
numbered ones. But in reality amateur or beginner players only need only a few clubs to
succeed in playing golf at that level and more than that is just unnecessary. Fewer clubs will
save you time on the golf course, as well as cash in your pocket, as you don't feel the need
to purchase a full set for your bag.
4.1.4 Issue/Problem 4 : Not suitable for amateur golfers who are trying to get into golf.
Mid to high handicap golfers (intermediate golfers) will want to consider irons that offer maximum
forgiveness, and promote a powerful launch and straighter ball flight for consistent carry and
distance like the PING G425 iron set. Lower handicap (amateur/new) players tend to look for irons
with a more compact head design but enable enhanced shot workability and even those who have a
good idea of which iron will suit them often don’t realise what’s put on the line in terms of ball
speed, carry distance and forgiveness by choosing a set above their ball striking capability. Even pro
players miss choose their iron and try and error is the best way to optimise the club fo your playing
preference.
4.1.5 Issue/Problem 5 : The set does not come with golf beg which are bulky and expensive.
Golf bag are not the most ergonomic bags because of the design and has to fit multiple amount of
golf including iron. It is commonly said that if you carry a golf bag, it should weigh no more than
20% of your total body weight it can cause back problem. An average set of golf clubs weighs
about 30lbs, and the bags themselves often weigh between 2 and 5 lbs. That adds up to 35 lbs that's
before additional bells and whistles you carry across the course with you. That means that, at a
minimum, you'll need to weigh more than 175 lbs for your 35 lb pack to be within the
recommended weight for carrying. But even if you meet this requirement, there are many reasons
carrying your golf bag can be damaging for your back. At the same time golf bags are expensive
and because golf companies that sell bags must charge higher prices depending on their marketing
costs. Apart from that the bag usually will not comes with the set of Iron golf club even if we
purchase a set of 11 iron clubs. The amount of components either inside or outside are made
from plastic, metal and another type of material, are so heavy weight comes from this type
of material. Some of the material cannot be renovate to a light material because of the
outstanding benefits for the bag itself.
4.2 Discussion
Golf Grips come in many different styles but pretty much fall into one of these categories
including Velvet, Composite, Wrap, Cord, and Hybrid (Cord + Rubber). Velvet grips are
which feature small repeating patterns of crosses using a rubber material. Velvet grips
provides a light texture and traction for control without sacrificing feel. Cord grips have
cord fabric interweaved through the surface of the grip. This provides traction and added
firmness. The Hybrid style is a newer more modern style grip that utilises both cord and
rubber. Hybrid grips, which use a softer rubber for the lower hand and cord (for traction/
control) in the upper hand. We can use all of the material or pattern in the new grip. The
concept of the water resistance or waterproof grip is like a car windshield wipers. No
amount of moisture can stick to it. In addition to keeping your contact with the club tight,
the new grips will not be effected from water damage. No more wear and tear from sweat,
rain, or hot sticky days on the course.

4.2.2 Suggested solution for issue or problem 2
Making the iron clubs are fully modular meaning that each piece can be interchanged to
create the perfect club for the intended golfer. This unique design attributes offer some will
help with fitting the perfect club at a moments notice. Can be suited on the go we can
change golf head with another golf head to match the field. Change the loft for a more
dynamic angle. We can add more weight to create greater impact or reduce weight of the
golf club for shorter hits depending on our gameplay.

By using interchangeable parts we can disassembled and assemble parts depending on their
gameplay preference or skill level. Whether it be pro amateur or intermediate players can
custom fir the clubs to their own preference one the spot. We can make it lighter or heavier
by adding or removing weights.

4.2.5 Suggested solution for issue or problem 5
(Including a smaller and more durable golf and using sturdier material like PU or canvas)
Using Polyurethane leather (PU) material for making golf bags. Although it is not real
leather, the material is extremely durable and can maintain its “brand new” look for a long
period of time. We can also use a mother sturdy material like canvas which are much more
cheaper light and durable. We can give it with purchase of a set of clubs.

5.RECOMENDATION AND IMPROVEMENT
Based on the company’s study and SWOT analysis conducted, the main problem faced by
PING is that their G425 irons are grip doesn't cater to sweaty palms and is not good in rainy
weather and customising is very expensive for custom set PING. There are too many
variation and number of golf clubs and are heavy to carry for traveling .Not suitable for
amateur golfers who are trying to get into golf and finally the set does not come with golf
beg which are bulky and expensive.
The approaches that can be propose for the major problems of the product are developing
the interchangeable golf set by using other good materials for the components or parts and
adding some good features to the product. I would like to propose a interchangeable features
for the stand golf set called “Modular iron golf set”. Interchangeable golf set is suitable in
storing in small spaces and the set is portable as it can be fold and dissembled an dissembled
in multiple smaller in size to be used in traveling or just storing. The dissemble and
assemble parts of the golf club can be minimised and enabling for easier storage of the
inside a cabin for traveling, storage room, or even in the car butt. The grips also can be use
for in rainy environment as the grip is made from water resistant material that will help with
the grip with a Hybrid grip that uses a combination of cord and rubber will be suitable in
many condition . It can be a perfect choice for all level of experience including amateur,
intermediate and pro level because of its uniq design to change according to the user. The
special features of the club is the interchangeable weight which we can help increase swing
distance or take the weight off to help in lowering wing distance.

6. CONCLUSION
Ping is one of the best and oldest golf brands that continue to break the mold when
designing PGA Tour quality golf clubs. From drivers to sand wedges, Ping is constantly
innovating to use their knowledge of the sport to help golfers gain more distance and get
more spin on the clubs. Performance wise, compared to other more traditional brands like
Titleist, Ping generally provides more forgiving clubs for a better price compared to Titleist.
Ping can also help give golfers more power and a better connection on the shot through their
muscle back blades. The additional chunkiness of the club head gives the player more punch
and rip the ball off the ground allowing you to tear the ball into the air at faster speed. Ping
is one of the most reputable brands in golf, with many Tour pros choosing to use these
clubs. As with any golf brand, Ping designs clubs for various skill levels, starting with mid-
range handicappers who want to improve their ball striking. Ultimately, if you want to hit
the ball further and get a better connection on the shot, Ping clubs are the way forward. By
doing a SWOT analysis of the products I learned many thing and from this company or
manufacturer can see the issues clearly, so they can develop a new strategy planning and can
develop better improvements for the products.
