Telehealth in Oregon 3

Abstract

Telehealth has served as a major source of patient-doctor communication from decades ago and,

has now made a revolutionary impact in healthcare during today’s health crisis. Some States

such as Texas and Kansas, along with Oregon, which consist of at least one-third of its

population in rural areas, have also adapted to telehealth to provide medical care to its

population. Oregon has utilized telehealth as a means of improving healthcare and reducing the

mortality rates in rural communities. The geriatric population which makes up about 17.6% of

Oregon, experience the most difficulties in travelling from rural to urban areas due to limited

access in transportation, long travelling times, and increase transportation costs. Six peer-

reviewed articles were used to investigate this topic along with sources from the Department of

Health & Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The topic under

review will focus on the geriatric population in these rural areas, where transportation to the

nearest healthcare facility is constrained and driving distance can take increase lengths of time

for the administration of medical services. With telehealth in place, there have been many

changes in the provision of care for geriatrics both in improved accessibility and affordability,

particularly in rural areas of Oregon.
