Eligible Content level, reading independently and proficiently.

Lesson Objectives The students will read the first 5 chapters of the novel this week
and answer the corresponding study guide questions.
Materials The Contender novels, study guides, writing utensils, blank
paper
Planning for Learners Differentiation: Process: We will rotate between reading
independently, popcorn reading, and me reading aloud
Modifications/Accommodations: Redirection to remain on task,
preferential seating
Lesson Presentation
Introduction
Sequence of activities  Monday: Distribute books and study guides- about 20
including assessments mins. Use the remainder of class to begin reading the
chapter aloud and answer the study guide questions.
 Tuesday: Finish reading chapter 1 aloud and give time to
do character sketch activity in study guide. Assign
chapter 2 reading and questions for rest of
class/homework.
 Wednesday: Go over Chapter 2 questions and determine
how to read Chapter 3. Assign any remaining text of
chapter 3 and questions as homework.
 Thursday: Go over Chapter 3 questions and read Chapter
4 aloud.
 Friday: Make sure everyone is caught up on Chapters 1-
4. Read Chapter 5- give choice of independent, popcorn
or aloud. Assign remainder and questions as homework
if not completed.
Lesson Wrap-up Go over the events of the 1st 5 chapters and questions daily to
ensure that everyone is caught up. Allow time for discussion on

themes like race and poverty. Give context to time frame as
necessary- some students may be familiar with Civil Rights
movement due to their history classes, but some may not.
