Lesson Outcome
• By the end of this session you will have learnt
the key concepts relating to the health and
safety signs / symbols:-
– Prohibitive
– Warning
– Mandatory
– Fire
• You will have acquired the knowledge and
understanding to apply these concepts to a work
placement.

Background Information
• 2 million people who worked during the last year
were suffering from an illness (long standing as
well as new cases) they believed was caused or
made worse by their current or past work.
551,000 of these were new cases.
• 180 workers were killed at work, a rate of 0.6 per
100,000 workers.
• 131,895 other injuries to employees were
reported, a rate of 502.2 per 100,000
employees.

Background Information
• 246,000 reportable injuries occurred,
according to the Labour Force Survey, a
rate of 870 per 100,000 workers.
• 29.3 million days were lost overall (1.24
days per worker), 24.6 million due to work-
related ill health and 4.7 million due to
workplace injury.

Safety at Work
• Safety at work is an important issue for any
industry. Your future employer is responsible for
setting up safe ways of working and you are
responsible for knowing the rules and carrying
them out.
• You will find information on health and safety
everywhere you go in the business world.
• This information is in the form of signs and
symbols.
The shape and colour of safety signs give you particular instructions or information.

and negation bar, and
the symbol graphic
should always be black.

people that specific
behaviour is forbidden
for safety reasons
Hazard Symbol
A hazard symbol is a
yellow equilateral
triangle and the
symbol graphic
should always be
black. A hazard
symbol should be
used to warn people
of hazards or dangers • All hazard supplementary text
should be preceded with

red rectangle and

Supplementary signs are
sometimes added to other signs to
give extra information.

• A clear understanding of these signs and
symbols and how they work is essential to
enable you to operate safely in working
environments, especially when working
under the pressure of time.
Task 2
• Using what you have learned about safety
signs, make a list of signs that you would
expect to find on your work placement as
part of the preparation.
Task 3: Safety Signs Quiz
