INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND: Pakchoi (Brassica chinenis) also known as Chinese cabbage is a leafy vegetable
which is grown through Guyana. This crop can be eaten either cooked or raw. It is a green vegetable, it
leaves are rich in vitamin minerals and dietary fibre.
AIM: To determine if organic mulch (dry grass) has any influence on crop yield and weed suppression.
PROBLEM STATEMENT: It was noted for the past year; weeds had rapidly grown and affected the
crops plants. The weeds competed for several reasons such as water, nutrients, sunlight, etc….and as such
production was very low. Consequently, profit was adversely affected.
METHODOLOGY
Several step took place before the transplanting of the seedlings. These steps include: firstly, a crop was
chosen and the name of the crop is Pak Choi. Then seedlings were set and after two weeks’ land
preparation began, after land preparation incorporation of manure took place the irrigation of soil took
place then the seedlings were transplanted. Data and recording are done, and are kept.
Experimental Design
A number of activities are carried out in this investigation which includes ploughing, harrowing,
measuring, applying organic and inorganic fertilizers; follow by transplanting and irrigation.
In this project mulch plants are being compared with un-mulched plants to determine if mulch plants
produce higher yield than un-mulch plants and if mulching can suppress weeds. Two long beds are
planted with Cabbage (Brassica oleraceae var capitata) or Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) plants. However, 1
bed will have organic mulch and 1 bed will not have mulch. The bed that has mulch will be given the
name/label M and that without mulch will be label NM. In this investigation M&NM beds are compare to
determine which bed has less or more weeds and more or less crop yield. Additionally, the number and
color of leaves of 5 random plants of each bed will be obtained and recorded.
Incorporation of manure The manure was distributed and was spread evenly on the beds.
Then it was plowed and mixed together with the soil.
Irrigation of soil After mixing the manure with the soil the beds were then soaked
with water.
Transplanting of seedlings The holes were measured in order for the crops to be planted in
and even row. Then the transplanting began.
Watering cans The watering cans was used to irrigate the soil

. As shown in the 1st bar chart is the number of leaves and high of crop yield over the seven-week
period which shows that the crop yield was poor. Whereas in the second bar chart the number
leaves and high of crop yield on the un-mulched bed was growing very good production of Pak
choi.
Discussion
To grow successful Pak choi, plenty of nitrogen and calcium were needed for the plants along
with organic fertilizer, thus they need lot of nutrients. Base on the data collected during the
experimental period both plots were able to produce and appropriate result. The un-mulch bed
that consist of organic manure produce higher crop and larger leaves than mulch bed which also
had organic manure and mulch.
Mulch bed was poor but still had a good result because it contains mulch, however un-mulch bed
produces greater number of crop yield than mulch. Improper irrigation of crops causes mulch
bed not to produce greater amount which it supposed to. The plant which was un-mulch grow
quickly than mulch which was not expected.
The researcher notice that yellow leaves in the mulch bed , this sign mean the crop had either too
much or too little water which cause the yellow leaves.
Conclusion
It was concluded that the mulch bed did not give or provided good crop yield, but
the mulch help in suppressing the weeds, however the un mulch bed produces
healthier crop yield but the weed grow higher as well
Limitation
It was observed that mulch bed could not provide healthier crops than the un mulch
bed
Recommendation
It was recommended that the mulch and un mulch plants use chemicals pesticides
in order to improve the quality of the crop
Cost analysis
The cost analysis was done for the plant pak choi that was grown. These plants were not treated
with any fertilizer but was manage as mulch and un mulched
