COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide an overview of the human resource profession. Students
will develop basic capabilities in applying and analyzing the fundamentals of human resource
management in contemporary organizations. The course covers the functions, roles and
competencies of human resource management, including: staffing (manpower planning,
recruiting, selection and displacement), compensation and benefits, employee development,
performance management, and labor relations, all in the context of legal and regulatory
compliance and emerging trends for professional practice. In addition, student will understand
how the strategic management of human resources contributes to building and sustaining
competitive advantage in a global and changing environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:


1. Describe the major functional areas of professional practice in human resources.
2. Apply various fundamental techniques form each functional area of human resources
management to the analysis and evaluation of typical HR issues.
3. Identify the importance of positioning human resources functions in the strategic
operation of the organization.
4. Demonstrate and understanding of the current legal and regulatory environment that
governs the various human resource functions.

The class will concentrate more on discussion and analysis of concepts and contemporary
issues in Human Resource Management rather than on recall of individual facts or specific
details. Class will include a variety of teaching methodologies including lecture, case studies
and other in class activities.

Decenzo and Robbins., Human Resource Management, 11th Edition.

REFERENCE TEXT:
Yusuf, Nazmul, Sultana and Farha (2017), Understanding Human Resource Management:
Cases from Bangladesh, 1st Edition, Somoy Prakashon, Dhaka.
Dessler, Human Resource Management, 10th edition
Noe and Hollen Beck, Human Resource Management, Gaining a Competitive Edge, 4th
edition.In addition some handouts may be given in class from time to time if needed.

N.B. All marks will be added and the final score will be recorded in Letter-Grades according to
AIUB Grading System.
Exams: All exams will consist of short conceptual questions, case analysis etc. There will be
no improvement exams. Make-up exams are permissible, but may be considered at 15%
deduction by the instructor on the basis of documented illness or emergency situation.

Quiz: These are announced short exams on class. No make up quizzes will be administered.

Project: A project template containing the brief outline of the desired final report will be
provided. Students are expected to follow the guideline for the report preparation and
presentation. Additional course materials, like a standard format of business report, HR
related journals may be given to students. These are not mandatory materials but will help the
students to adorn their learning.
Attendance & Participation: Daily attendance is mandatory, as it is critical for success in
this course. A student, who misses 3 consecutive classes could be dropped from the course.
Please strive to get clarifications as much as necessary, in and out of class. Class participation
is highly encouraged for learning.

GENERAL ETIQUETTE:

- Mobile phones should be turned off.


- Noise is not expected during the lecture.
- Any plagiarism / cheating during the exams will not be tolerated and will result in F
in the course and even disciplinary action.
