What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body mass index (BMI) is a tool that healthcare providers use to estimate the amount of body fat by
using your height and weight measurements. It can help assess risk factors for certain health conditions.
The BMI is not always an accurate representation of body fatness. The higher your BMI, the higher your
risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing
problems, and certain cancers.

BMI Ranges

For most adults, an ideal BMI is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range.

For children and young people (2-18 years old) the BMI calculation takes into account age and gender a
swell as height and weight.

CLASSIFICATION:

Below 18.5 Underweight

Between 18.5 and 24.9 Normal

Between 25 and 29.9 Overweight

30 or over Obesity
