PASSAGE 1

3.Old Kaspar had witnessed the Battle of Blenheim.

Kaspar was certainly in good mood as he had finished his work and at the time he was
sitting in front of the door of his cottage, the sun was going to set so it was not too hot.
4.
Peterkin and wilhemine were the two grandchildren of old Kaspar.
They were confused after hearing the claims of their grandfather about the war
which he calls a great victory.
5
The children were confused because the war involved huge devastation of life. Soldiers
were killed and their bodies were left to rot in open field. It is totally inhuman. Kaspar is not
right in calling this battle ‘a great victory’.
PASSAGE 2
1The family of Old Kaspar has been referred to in the extract. His granddaughter Wilhelmine
and grandson Peterkin
2. Wilhemine was old kaspar's granddaughter. She was playing on the grass.
3.She saw her brother Peterkin rolling something that was large and round.
4. Peter King head found a thing by the side of the river when he was playing there . He
came back home to know what the thing was.
5Grandfather told him that that was somebody's skull. The person must have died in the
battle fought at Blenheim.
PASSAGE 6
1.THE GRANDCHILDREN PETERKIN AND WILHELMINE ADDRESSED BY CASPER.
THE TONE IS ASSERTIVE AND EMPHATIC AS HE FEELS THAT IT WAS THE GRAND
VICTORY OF ENGLISH.
2. The query which was posed to the old man by the young Peterkin, was that why the battle
was fought and what outcomes were seen.

3.The poet has used the word 'cried' to emphasise the conventional belief of the old man
about the war.
4.The ‘famous victory’ refers to the triumph in the battle which also happens to be an
example of sheer patriotism. Kaspar believed that the soldiers sacrificed their life for the
country and did not die in vain. Their death served the purpose of victory in the battle.
5.The old man was unable to tell the children the purpose and reason of fighting the war.
PASSAGE 8
1.The speaker is old Kaspar.
The old man tried to justify the war by saying that such things like devastation and killings
were the part of war which was fought for grand victory. His justifying the war clearly showed
his conventional attitude towards the war
2. In the Battle of Blenheim, many lives were lost. Thousands of people were killed in the
battle. There was also a great loss of the property. The houses were set to fire. Indeed, there
was a huge destruction.

3 In the Battle of Blenheim, the whole country was ruined far and wide with fire and sword.
The most tragic thing was that the expected mothers and new bom children died in the
battle.
4 I do not agree with the justification of war.Common people had to pay a hefty price for the
‘famous victory’ in the Battle of Blenheim. People’s houses were burnt down and they were
left with no place to live. Many common people including childing mother and new-born
babies were killed. Thousands of soldiers from both sides were killed in the battle.
