TARO CHIPS

COMPANY BACKGROUND

MCM Enterprise is a Bicol-based startup enterprise that will manufacture taro chips as an alternative to
more commercialized chip snacks and will be distributed to wholesalers and retailers in the local market.
The business office is located at Gateway Avenue, Biῆan City, Laguna.

THE PROPONENT

“Walking the talk.” Through teaching entrepreneurship courses for the past 18 years, innovative,
determined and reasonable risk taker are characteristics that can best describe the owner. He found it
easier to conceptualize making plans, execution and management of proposed business.

The consciousness of what to eat of some health buff individuals paved the way for the conceptualization
of an alternative healthy chip snacks. The growing demand for this type of snacks is substantial to sustain
the operation of the proposed business.

THE ORGANIZATION

Because of the very limited resources of the proponent, the prosed business will be formally registered
with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as a single proprietor. Mr. Melchor Morandarte, a
college professor who is the proponent of this concept shall be the one to manage the entire operations
of the business.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED BUSINESS

• Provide an alternative but healthy chip snacks for kids and health conscious adults.
• Create employment opportunities in the community through the increase in production of taro
and in the manufacturing of the chip snacks.
• Increase production and sale by 15% in the first year, 20% on the second year and 30% on the
third year of operation.
• Set the tone in providing responsible business.

THE PRODUCT

Eating junk foods is becoming a habit especially for kids. In fact, the overflowing of different kinds of
junk foods made by both local and foreign manufacturers flooded the supermarkets everywhere. Kids
seemed to be addicted to them due to its artificial flavoring that captivated their taste buds.
Manufacturers of these kinds of snack chips are unmindful of the possible harm it can do to an individual
with habitual consumption of these snacks as long as they earn profit. Since it will be difficult to stop the
kids from continuous eating of junk foods, the proponent thought of offering the taro chips in order to
provide healthier alternatives. A product which will attract the market, kids and adult alike is a healthy
chip snacks. It will come in 100 gram packages and shall be offered at an affordable price of ₱10.00 per
pack.

The product will provide an alternative nutritious snack and will use taro as the main ingredient.

Taro or dasheen corms possess more calories than potatoes. 100 grams of root provides 112 calories.
Their calorie value chiefly comes from complex carbohydrates, amylose and amylopectin. Nonetheless,
the roots are very low in fats and protein than in cereals and pulses. Their protein levels can be
comparable to that of other tropical food sources like yam, cassava, potato, plantain, etc.

The corms, however, are free from gluten protein. They carry high-quality phyto-nutrition profile
comprising of dietary fiber, and antioxidants in addition to moderate proportions of minerals, and
vitamins.

Taro is one of the finest sources of dietary fibers; 100 grams flesh provides 4.1 gram or 11 percent of daily-
requirement of dietary fiber. Together with slow digesting complex carbohydrates, moderate amounts
of fiber in the food help gradual rise in blood sugar levels.

Yellow-fleshed roots and young, tender leaves have significant levels of phenolic flavonoid pigment
antioxidants such as beta carotene and cryptoxanthin along with vitamin A. Eating 100 grams of fresh
taro leaves provides 4,825 IU (international units) or 161 percent of the recommended daily allowance of
vitamin A. Altogether, these compounds are required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes, skin
and vision. Consumption of natural foods rich in flavonoids helps protect from lung and oral cavity
cancers.

It also contains good levels of some of the valuable B-complex group of vitamins such as pyridoxine
(vitamin B-6), folates, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and thiamin.

Further, the corms provide healthy amounts of some of important minerals like zinc, magnesium, copper,
iron, and manganese. In addition, the root has very good amounts of potassium. Potassium is an
important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure.

TARGET MARKET

The product is suited for all ages especially for preschoolers and those who are health conscious
individuals.

MARKETING MIX

Using the applicable marketing Ps will be part of the marketing strategies of the proposed business. Food
tasting will be one of the main promotional activities to be done six months before the formal
introduction of the products in the market. Schools who prohibited the selling of junk foods will be one
of the targets since the product is not categorized as junk food.

COMPETITION

Products like banana chips, sweet potato chips, and cassava chips, which are available in stores and
supermarkets, are considered direct competitors but have different nutritional value to offer as stated
above.

FINANCIAL PLAN

Starting investment for the venture will be Ten Thousand pesos (₱10,000.00) excluding the necessary
permits and licenses.

Projected overhead expense of ₱7,000.00 per month, with cost of materials amounting to ₱1,700.00.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Enterprise will commence its operation this coming April, in time for the summer vacation where
most of the target markets are at home or are going places and always have something to eat while
travelling.
