from x y . 2 2

2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2
x y − (−3x y ) = x y + 3x y = 4x y
2 2
4x y = 1 × 2 × 2 × x × x × y × y

Factors of 4x y are 1, 2, 4, x, 2x, 4x, y, 2y, 4y, x , 2x , 4x , y , 2y , 4y , xy,

is ______.

 A. x
2

 B. y
2

 C. x

 D. 24x
2 2
24x y = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × x × x × y × y

Irreducible factors of 24x 2

Factorisation of Algebraic Expressions

3. Write the greatest common factor for each of the following terms:
 (i) 3x 2
y, 18xy ,
2
and 6xy
(ii) qrxy, pryz, and rxyz

(i)
2
3x y = 3 × x × x × y

18xy = 3 × 2 × 3 × x × y × y

6xy = −1 × 2 × 3 × x × y

The greatest common factor is obtained by the product of irreducible

common factors in all the terms.

The greatest common factor = 2 × x × y = 2xy

(ii)
qrxy
=q×r×x×y
pryz = p × r × y × z

rxyz = r × x × y × z

The greatest common factor is obtained by the product of irreducible

common factors in all the terms.

The greatest common factor = r × y = ry

4. Choose the common factor for 21pqr + 7p 2 2

q r
2 2
+ 49p qr from the given
options.

 A. 2
7p q r
2 2

 B. 14p qr
2

 C. 14p q r
2 2 2

 D. 7pqr

21pqr = 3 × 7 × p × q × r

2 2 2
7p q r = 7 × p × p × q × q × r × r

2
49p qr = 7 × 7 × p × p × q × r

2 2 2 2
21pqr + 7p q r + 49p qr = 7pqr(3 + pqr + 7p)

Factorisation of Algebraic Expressions

5. Factorise: y 2
+ 8zx − 2xy − 4yz

2
y + 8zx − 2xy − 4yz

2
= y − 2xy + 8zx − 4yz

= y(y − 2x) − 4z(y − 2x)

= (y − 4z)(y − 2x)

6. Which of the following is a factor of a 2

x
3
− 2abx
2 2
+ b x ?

 A. a − bx

 B. ax
2
− b

 C. ax − b

 D. a − bx
2

2 3 2 2
a x − 2abx + b x

2 2 2

= x(a x − 2abx + b )

2 2
= x((ax) − 2(ax)b + b )

2
= x(ax − b)

= x(ax − b)(ax − b)

ax − b is a factor of a 2
x
3
− 2abx
2 2
+ b x.

7. Find the possible length and breadth of a rectangle whose area is

(x + 9x + 20) square units.
2

2
x + 9x + 20

= x
2
+ (5 + 4)x + (5 × 4)

[Using the identity (x + a)(x + b) = x 2

+ (a + b)x + ab ]

= (x + 4)(x + 5)

The length and breadth of the rectangles are (x + 4) units and (x + 5) units
or (x + 5) units and (x + 4) units.
